Nintendo announces the SNES Mini: 21 games confirmed
20 classic SNES games plus the never before released Star Fox 2 are coming this September.
Time to dust off your credit card and get ready for another Australian online retailer meltdown. Nintendo has officially announced the SNES Mini (officially the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System), which is set to launch in Australia on 30 September.
The SNES Mini will cost $119.95 locally, which is a little pricey. You do, however, get two controllers in the box, rather than the single controller the NES Mini shipped with, and a longer cord.
Nintendo did somewhat vary the games list between markets for the NES Mini, notably offering a few RPGs with the Japanese version. Presuming that we get the model sold in the UK (and not the hideous purple US model, which is also being produced), the full games list should read as follows:
Full list of SNES Mini games
- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Donkey Kong Country
- Final Fantasy III
- Kirby Super Star
- Kirby's Dream Course
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Mega Man X
- Secret of Mana
- Star Fox
- Star Fox 2
- Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
- Super Castlevania IV
- Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid
- Super Punch-Out!
- Yoshi's Island
That's an exceptional games list for anyone who likes classic games. Many of these titles have either refined the classic Nintendo formula to near-perfection or defined it in the first place. It also contains some very hard-to-find titles, such as the sublime Secret of Mana and Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Just as with the NES Mini, however, this is a sealed system with no card slot and no official way to add more games to the unit.
The SNES Mini will also see the debut of a game that Nintendo has never officially released, Star Fox 2. While Star Fox 2 was completed (or at least near-complete), it was never officially released, although the code for the title did leak online many years ago.
It will be fascinating to see if Nintendo tweaks Star Fox 2 in any way compared to the leaked version. Officially, it's 20 games "plus one", because Star Fox 2 will apparently unlock only after you've completed the first level of Star Fox. That's in no way an onerous task, although newer gamers may find its heavily jagged polygons a little archaic.
It's fair to say that last year's release of the Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System took Nintendo, and indeed the Christmas gift market, by surprise. Nintendo's tiny ode to the classic NES was insanely difficult to find as an online order, let alone physically in store, due to its wild popularity. It melted down multiple Australian online retailer sites moments before it became available and led to many frustrated gamers seeking out consoles at hyper-inflated prices on eBay. Here's to hoping that Nintendo takes the lessons learned from the NES Mini to heart and produces a sufficient quantity to keep gamers happy this time around.
Also, for the record, we were wrong and Nintendo clearly is releasing the SNES Mini in 2017.
While you can burn a hole in your wallet trying to track down a NES Mini on eBay, they don't come much cheaper than the original consoles. The Gamesmen is a trusted Australian retailer that sells retro consoles in working condition with six months warranty included. Here's what's on offer.
