Australians warned of false car insurance claims.

There are fresh reports of scams where members of the public are receiving phone calls, purportedly from the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), informing them they need to pay car insurance claims.

The AAA advises that these calls are fakes, and are not in any way associated with the organisation.

This is not the first time phone calls have been used to extort Australians with vague, official-sounding threats, and anyone who receives one of these calls should report it to Scamwatch.

Car insurance claims aren't done this way and you generally won't receive calls directly from the AAA. Instead it's handled by the insurers. This is one of the reasons so many people look at an insurer's customer service record when comparing vehicle insurance.

It's not unheard of that premiums may rise following claims, so it can be worth comparing insurance prices. This can be particularly useful thanks to the plethora of discounts available for new customers, making it possible to discover lower premiums if you haven't recently updated your car insurance.
