2022 BMW 8 Series adds tweaked looks and extra tech ahead of mid-year launch

2022 BMW 8 Series Convertible

The 2022 BMW 8 Series is set to benefit from refreshed front-end design with an illuminated grille and a host of interior upgrades, with prices starting from $184,900.

BMW Australia's 8 Series range is set to receive an update for the 2022 model year with slightly refreshed styling and additional tech headlining the updates for its flagship luxury sports model.

All 3 of the 8 Series body styles – Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé – in both 840i and M850i xDrive flavours will be wearing the mildly tweaked fascia, which incorporates a new "Iconic Glow" illuminated kidney grille with U-shaped vertical bars. Those looking at an M850i xDrive will also find the addition of BMW M wing mirrors and M badging on the grille.

There are 5 new exterior colour options set to help it stand out more than the indiscernible new looks, including Skyscraper Grey metallic, San Remo Green metallic, M Portimao Blue metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey and BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue. Additional 20-inch M light alloy wheel designs will also be optionally available for more personalisation.

2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé

All Australian-delivered models still come standard with the M Sport package which includes more aerodynamic front and rear aprons and side skirts, M Sport brakes with blue calipers, along with new lower air intakes with horizontal struts up front and a Dark Shadow metallic rear diffuser insert.

Inside, all models in the line-up gain a larger 12.3-inch Control Display infotainment screen, replacing the 10.25-inch display of before and complementing its existing 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The BMW Drive Recorder is also now fitted as standard – think of it as an integrated dash cam that records up to 40 seconds of footage of the vehicle's surroundings, either automatically or with the quick press of a button when desired.

840i buyers are also treated to the addition of CraftedClarity glass trim on the gear selector, iDrive controller and starter button, something that was previously reserved for the M850i xDrive. The M850i does add a BMW M stitched leather steering wheel that's closer to what you'll find in the full-fat M8, to more closely align it with its even more powerful sibling.

2022 BMW 8 Series Coupé

The 8 Series' powertrain options carry on unchanged from before, with the 840i still sporting a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-6 producing 250kW and 500Nm which is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, making the Coupé good for the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.0 seconds, while the Gran Coupé and Convertible are a touch slower and 5.2 and 5.3 seconds respectively.

The M850i xDrive boasts an even more potent 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with 390kW and 750Nm and the addition of all-wheel drive. The Coupé will hustle itself to triple digits in just 3.7 seconds, while the Gran Coupé and Convertible manage it in 3.9 seconds.

The updated 8 Series is due to touch down in Australia in mid-2022, following a European launch in the coming few months, with prices rising by a few thousand across the range.
