Where are the best places to stay in New York?

Best cheap hotels in New York

New York and cheap aren't often bundled together, but you still can find a bargain if you know how, where and when to look. We were able to find rooms at well-reviewed hotels, like EVEN Hotel Brooklyn and Homewood Suites Midtown Manhattan Times Square South within reach of popular New York attractions for less than AUD$200 per night – about half of the city's average hotel price.

A few tips on finding a hotel deal in New York:

  • If travelling on a weekend, stay downtown. Most of the hotels there cater for business travellers, who are less likely to be in town on a Friday or Saturday night.
  • If extreme temperatures don't bother you, visit in winter, when temperatures are at their lowest or in the peak of summer (specifically August) when temperatures and humidity are at their highest.
  • Consider staying in Brooklyn, Queens or New Jersey, where prices aren't as high as staying in Manhattan, but you can still access city attractions by train or subway.

Best luxury hotels in New York

Luxury comes in all shapes, sizes and locations in New York City, from the 450+ room business-luxe Conrad New York to the chic and unique, 72-room Hotel Giraffe.

What makes them so luxurious? The Hotel Giraffe offers continental breakfast, a wine and cheese reception nightly and passes to the New York Sports Club in your fees, meanwhile at the Conrad, there are Hudson River views from spacious suites and curated art in each suite.

Luckily, no matter where you'd like to stay in the city, there's bound to be an upscale offering. In Brooklyn, you'll find 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge; on the Upper East Side, there's The Mark New York; and at the southern end of Central Park, there's the iconic Plaza.

Best hotels in Brooklyn, New York

With the nearby Smorgasburg Markets and Manhattan just a short subway ride or walk across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge away, Brooklyn is an ideal option for those looking for a quieter place to stay that still offers easy access to New York's attractions.

It's also home to chic hotels where you'll have the opportunity to wake up to views of Manhattan from across the East River that you just can't get by staying in the city.

Most downtown Manhattan hotels cater to business travellers and provide clean, convenient and chic accommodation within easy reach of some of the area's top sites like the Staten Island Ferry and 9/11 Memorial, both a short walk to the shops of SoHo and eats in Chinatown and Little Italy.

Alternate New York accommodation options

If you're after short-term accommodation, you can book accommodation on sites like Airbnb and HomeAway. Although a hot topic, Airbnb is technically legal in New York City – as long as the unit is only rented out for 30 days or less.

If you're planning a long stint in the city and are considering renting an apartment on Airbnb, this may not be your best option unless you're willing to move.

Frequently asked questions about New York hotels

Which hotels are near Times Square in New York City?

Dozens of hotels are within a block or two of Times Square, but some of the top-rated hotels with views of the bright lights include the W New York - Times Square, Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel and the New York Marriott Marquis.

Which hotels are near Central Park in New York City?

Stretching 4km long between 59th and 110th streets and 800 metres wide between Fifth Avenue and Central Park West, this massive urban green space has plenty of accommodation options surrounding it.

Staying at the southern end of the park, at hotels like Park Lane Hotel New York City and JW Marriott Essex House New York, you will enjoy sweeping views without straying far from Midtown.

If you're hoping to stay close to Central Park for access to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the American Museum of Natural History, The Franklin Hotel New York City and Excelsior Hotel New York City will suit your needs.

Are there cheap hotels in New York City for under $100?

It's very unlikely you'll find a decent hotel in Manhattan with a private room and ensuite for less than $100. That said, if you're willing to forego some amenities, we were able to find private accommodation at hostels, including Broadway Hotel N Hostel and Jazz on the Park Youth Hotel for less than $100 per night.

Alternatively, you could look at the outer parts of Long Island or Queens where you can find basic accommodation like the Giorgio Hotel, which is still near a subway station, for less than $100 depending on your travel dates.
