New on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus, Stan, BINGE, Foxtel and more in August 2022

The dragons are back! The Sandman is coming! She-Hulk is stomping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe! We're getting a TV show inspired by iconic baseball movie A League of Their Own! There's plenty of new shows and movies coming to streaming.

Needless to say, August is shaping up to be a doozy. Check out all the highlights below.

What's new on Netflix

Netflix is celebrating the final month of winter with the release of highly-anticipated series The Sandman. Based on Neil Gaiman's groundbreaking comic book, the show will follow the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the mistakes he's made during his vast existence. If you're into horror, this one is not to miss.

August will also bring subscribers new seasons of Locke & Key, Never Have I Ever and Indian Matchmaking.

On the movie front, keep an eye out for Wedding Season, which stars Aussie actress Pallavi Sharda and Suraj Sharma as 2 people who pretend to date in order to survive the upcoming wedding season and avoid additional pressure from their family to find a partner.

You might also like Day Shift, a comedy starring Jamie Foxx as a hard-working dad whose mundane pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires. Also, Riverdale star Lili Reinhart is ready to charm you in Look Both Ways. She plays a young woman whose life splits into parallel realities after she takes a pregnancy test.

What's new on BINGE and Foxtel

On BINGE, the biggest premiere of the month is without a doubt new series House of the Dragon, which is set in the same universe as Game of Thrones, only 200 years earlier. The show will centre on House Targaryen and a brand-new battle for the coveted Iron Throne.

August also marks new seasons of Industry and Reservation Dogs. For new content that isn't dragon-related, we recommend Sherwood, an acclaimed British drama about 2 horrifying killings that tear a small community apart. If you love survival shows, Alone: Frozen will drop off 6 contestants on the frigid North Atlantic Coast of Labrador, Canada, where they have to endure harsh weather conditions.

Movie highlights for August includes The Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark, family comedy Clifford The Big Red Dog and adventure film Uncharted.

All these titles will be on Foxtel as well. Additionally, Gogglebox Australia returns with a new season this month and The Thief, His Wife And The Canoe looks like a must for crime enthusiasts. The show is inspired by true events and showcases how a man faked his own death to claim the insurance money. Reality really is stranger than fiction sometimes.

What's new on Stan

It's an eventful August over at Stan too. The platform is debuting brand new episodes of City on a Hill, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, House of Ho and Code 404. Reality fans can look forward to a new season of RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race, which will pair nicely with Stan original RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under.

Moreover, this month marks the end of the road for popular series Better Call Saul, with the finale scheduled to drop on 16 August. It's been a fun ride, so we're guessing you'll want to be around for the epic conclusion. As for movies, premieres of note include Mother!, Rampage, Game Night and Life of the Party.

What's new on Prime Video

On Prime Video, new series A League of Their Own, inspired by the beloved 90s movie, follows a generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The action centres on Carson (Abbi Jacobson) and Max (Chanté Adams) as they carve their paths toward the field surrounded by a new ensemble of hilarious characters.

For movies, check out Thirteen Lives, which recounts the incredible true story of the tremendous global effort to rescue a Thai soccer team trapped in a cave. Inspired by the true story, it stars Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, Tom Bateman, Paul Gleeson and more.

Elsewhere, August brings Prime Video users new seasons of All or Nothing: Arsenal, The Outlaws and Making the Cut, plus the Sylvester Stallone superhero movie Samaritan. It will also feature the streaming debut of Cyrano, a re-imagining of the classic tale revolving around Cyrano de Bergerac and a devastating love triangle.

What's new on Disney Plus

Disney Plus is debuting a new Marvel TV series in August. She-Hulk: Attorney at Law stars Tatiana Maslany as a lawyer who specialises in cases involving superhumans. She also happens to be a Hulk. It's a comedy and the cast features Mark Ruffalo, Ginger Gonzaga, Jameela Jamil and Tim Roth.

Speaking of Marvel, I Am Groot is a new series of animated shorts starring Baby Groot from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. To call him adorable would be an understatement, so we're guessing these shorts will be the same.

Additionally, the platform is releasing its first Australian original, Fearless: The Inside Story of the AFLW. The docu-series is described as an emotional journey into the dreams, struggles and triumphs of the AFLW League.

We also recommend The Bear, which follows a young chef who returns to Chicago to run his family's sandwich shop in the aftermath of a tragedy. The series has been getting plenty of hype and is widely regarded as one of the best to come out this year. In a crowded TV landscape, that means it's a must-watch.

Another promising title is The Patient, a psychological thriller about a therapist held captive by a serial killer seeking help. It stars Steve Carell and Domhnall Gleeson. Colour us intrigued.

Keen an eye out for Mike, a series on the life of controversial boxer Mike Tyson. Disney Plus also has the heart-warming docuseries Welcome To Wrexham, following Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds as they take ownership of a UK football club.

More into movies? Gear up for Predator prequel Prey. The sci-fi film centres on a skilled Comanche warrior who protects her tribe from an alien predator that hunts humans for sport. Oh, and if you missed Lightyear in cinemas, you'll be able to stream the latest Pixar adventure on Disney Plus starting 3 August.

What's new on Paramount Plus

If you've been pining over 90s animated series Beavis and Butt-Head, you'll want to direct your attention to Paramount Plus this month. A revival is coming your way, promising to deliver all the comedy fans can handle.

The platform is also premiering more local content. The Bridge Australia is a reality series that will see 12 Aussies abandoned in the wilderness and forced to work together to build a bridge, while 6 Festivals is a new movie about a group of friends who attend music festivals in order to escape reality.

Other highlights on Paramount Plus for August include special South Park: The 25th Anniversary Concert, original film Secret Headquarters, documentary The Queen: In Her Own Words and docu-series Couples Therapy (US).

What's new on BritBox, Acorn TV and more

For fans of British telly, BritBox is premiering Life After Life this month. Based on Kate Atkinson's popular novel, this acclaimed 4-part series follows a woman who can't escape death. Subscribers are also getting complete seasons of Shakespeare & Hathway, The Durrells, The Yorkshire Vet and Criminal Justice.

Meanwhile, Acorn TV is debuting new Australian escapist mystery-drama series Darby and Joan, about 2 strangers who embark on an epic outback odyssey. It stars Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi.

Horror fan? Shudder has several exclusive premieres in store, as well as a new original film. What Josiah Saw is a horror thriller about an estranged family who reunites at a farmhouse to pay for their past sins. What could be more unsettling than a family reunion? Tune in to find out.

If you have AMC Plus, check out new anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead, which is set in the same universe as The Walking Dead. Each episode tells a fresh story, expanding this apocalyptic universe even further.
