In our weekly round-up, we take a look at hotels that have just opened, hotels that are in the works and major hotel changes across the globe.


Just opened: Spicers Retreat, Sydney

Spicers Retreat makes its debut in Sydney inside an 1880s Victorian terrace house on Victoria Street in Sydney’s leafy Potts Point.

Set within three townhouse properties, the bed and breakfast features a mixture of historic art-deco and modern architecture across 20 guest rooms.

Bookings include complimentary breakfast and a cocktail and canapes each evening.

Just opened: W Shanghai - The Bund, Shanghai

W Shanghai finds itself in the prime position of overlooking the Huangpu River in the bustling city of Shanghai.

Like all W Hotels, the W Shanghai prides itself on being an eclectic and unique accommodation option, boasting a neon art installation in the hotel’s living room, a kaleidoscope fixture at the welcome desk and a hidden speakeasy reminiscent of 1920s Shanghai.

There are 374 stylish rooms in total.

Just opened: Grand Park Kodhipparu, the Maldives

Joining the ranks of some of the most luxurious properties in the dreamy Maldives, Grand Park Kodhipparu is a one-island one-resort destination.

It boasts 120 villas, 65 of which feature private pools. Room options include beachfront pool villas, over-water villas and two-bedroom villas.

The resort is a 20-minute speedboat ride from Malé.

Just opened: Veriu Broadway, Sydney

The first venture of new hotel brand Veriu Hotels & Suites, Veriu Broadway is located inside a converted warehouse space and features 64 self-serviced apartments.

Bookings include complimentary use of Veriu’s explorer bicycles, a welcome drink and Wi-Fi.

Future projects for Veriu Hotels & Suites include the rebranding of properties in Camperdown and Randwick and new openings in Pyrmont, Central and Green Square.

Opening soon: Bawah Island, Indonesia

The remote Indonesian Bawah Island is opening up for tourists from 31 July 2017.

The remote and untouched island is a luxury retreat three hours from Singapore and is so exclusive that only 70 guests will be able to stay at one time. To accommodate, the island has 25 eco-designed suites and bungalows.

Bookings include transfers from Singapore, daily meals, laundry services, non-motorised water sports, beach towels and snorkelling equipment.

Opening soon: Alcyone Hotel Residences, Brisbane

Named after the brightest star in the Taurus constellation, Alcyone Hotel Residences is set to shine at Portside Hamilton next month.

The 4.5-star hotel will feature 105 apartments as well as a business centre.

Mantra to open new hotel in Epping, Melbourne

Melbourne’s northern suburbs are set to welcome a new Mantra hotel in mid-2019. Construction of the property, which will feature 214 rooms, a gym, an open carpark and secure bicycle storage, is to begin in late 2017.

IHG takes over Sebel properties in the Hunter Valley and the Hawkesbury Valley

The InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has taken over two of Sebel’s properties: the Sebel Resort and Spa Hunter Valley and the Sebel Resort and Spa Hawkesbury Valley. While the Hunter Valley property will continue to operate under the same name, the Hawkesbury Valley property has been rebranded as the Crown Plaza Hawkesbury Valley. No other changes have been announced.

AccorHotels and LP Holding to open three hotels in Myanmar

AccorHotels and LP Holding are developing three new hotels in Myanmar: the Mercure Mandalay Hill Resort, the Pullman Yangon Centrepoint and the Mandalay Hill Resort MGallery by Sofitel. The first development, the Mercure Mandalay Hill Resort, is set to open in late 2017.
