What to consider when choosing an NBN plan in Victoria

  • Which NBN technologies can I get? The NBN rollout involves multiple technology types, and you have no control over the type of connectivity you get. You may end up hooking up to the NBN via FTTP, FTTN, HFC Cable, Fixed Wireless NBN or NBN Satellite, but the choice isn't yours. Your physical location determines which technology you are able to use to connect to the Internet. The specific type of technology you get will also have an affect on your real-world speeds. For more on how the different technologies compare, check out our NBN technology comparison here.
  • When will broadband services cease in my area?
Once an area is declared ready for service by NBN, ADSL and other fixed-line broadband technologies must be switched off, typically over an 18-month period. You cannot decide to stay on your existing broadband connection. If you're in an area already declared NBN ready, the clock is ticking if you want your broadband services to continue. Even if all you require is phone service, you'll have to switch over to NBN VoIP as well. Our guide to switching to the NBN should help.
  • What speed tier do I require? The NBN plans with the lowest cost are typically those on the Basic speed tier, but that's best suited for very light users, considering that typical evening speeds sit around 9Mbps. If you have multiple people in your house, you've got to split that across all users in your house as well. Keep in mind that most broadband contracts are for two years, during which time your broadband needs could change markedly, with a need for more speed. For more on NBN Speed Tiers, check out our comprehensive guide here.
  • Do I want (or need) bundled extras? Generally speaking, if you sign up for a contract, many ISPs will include a bundled NBN-ready modem/router, although you can always procure your own. Beyond that choice, though, you can also opt for bundled telephony or entertainment products directly on your NBN broadband connection. It's worth checking if your ISP will also offer discounts if you have other services, such as mobile telephony with them.
