What we learned from the most popular YouTube videos in Australia in 2016

CarpoolKaraoke

My, there's a lot of Carpool Karaoke in here.

December means we start seeing lists of everything that was popular during the year. One of the first off the rank: YouTube's list of the most popular videos in Australia in 2016. Here's what we were watching during the last 12 months:

  1. Adele Carpool Karaoke
  2. HUGE EGGS SURPRISE TOYS CHALLENGE Inflatable water slide Disney Cars Toys Paw Patrol Spiderman
  3. Jennifer Lopez Carpool Karaoke
  4. Sia Carpool Karaoke
  5. Ice Cube, Kevin Hart And Conan Help A Student Driver - CONAN on TBS
  6. Parent Teacher Interviews
  7. Boogie Storm make Simon’s dream come true! | Auditions Week 5 | Britain’s Got Talent 2016
  8. Halsey covers Justin Bieber's 'Love Yourself' for triple j's Like A Version
  9. First Lady Michelle Obama Carpool Karaoke
  10. Does Elsa Eat Too Much? Play-Doh Disney Frozen Movie Clips Best Stop-Motion videos

Yes, there's a lot of Carpool Karaoke in there. Nonetheless, I'm pleased that this list isn't a total bust in terms of Australian content, unlike most of the rest of the streaming TV industry. Superwog's comedy clip at #6 and triple j's cover version at #8 fly the flag for Australia, and you could (at a stretch) also count Sia singing with James Corden as semi-Australian content.

Note also that the list includes a lot of content which wasn't produced for YouTube originally, but for broadcast on conventional TV as well. Between the four Carpool Karaoke inclusions, clips from Britain's Got Talent and Conan and the Like A Version song, it's clear that streaming media is still somewhat dependent on using footage that's originally shot elsewhere. That balancing act looks likely to continue for a while.

Meanwhile, if you want to sink into all 10 videos, have at it:

6. Parent Teacher Interviews
