GLMR is the native cryptocurrency of the Moonbeam network. Launched in 2020, Moonbeam is an Ethereum-compatible smart contract parachain built using the Polkadot ecosystem. It was the first parachain ever to launch on Polkadot.
With a focus on cross-chain compatibility, the project is designed to make it easy to deploy a wide array of Ethereum-centric decentralised applications (dapps) within the Polkadot ecosystem. According to Moonbeam’s website, the protocol has implemented Ethereum-Virtual-Machine (EVM) capabilities, which allows for the seamless interaction of Ethereum smart contracts. The protocol has so far integrated with several APIs, bridges, oracles, dapps and Web 3.0 wallet providers. All of these can connect with Moonbeam, Polkadot and Ethereum seamlessly. Glimmer, or GLMR, is the foundation of the Moonbeam protocol. The coin powers all smart contracts that are executed within Moonbeam’s ecosystem and ensures the security of the network. The token is required by all dapps that wish to build on Moonbeam and is also used for on-chain governance, where token holders can influence decisions regarding protocol development.
