Money Hack: How to earn more reward points this Christmas
3 ways to get extra value from your Christmas shopping this year.
As Christmas is fast approaching, many of us will spend the next few weeks scrambling to get our shopping done. Whether you're ticking off wish lists for loved ones or treating yourself, there are many ways you can reward your generosity with frequent flyer points this festive season.
The hack
From earning points on your groceries to buying gifts with a frequent flyer credit card, here are three easy ways to get extra value from your spending this holiday season.
1. Shop online through a frequent flyer store
You can pick up points as you spend through frequent flyer stores such as the Qantas Shopping one and Velocity eStore. You can shop online with partnered big brands including ASOS, eBay, Apple, Dymocks, Country Road, David Jones, THE ICONIC and more. You'll pay the regular retail prices and enjoy the same offers as if you were shopping directly through the brand's online store, but you'll earn frequent flyer points for every $1 you spend.
There are also a bunch of bonus points offers at this time of year. For example, at the time of writing, you can earn 10 Qantas Points per $1 spent at David Jones (usually 5 points), 5 points per $1 spent at Woolworths (usually 2 points), 10 points per $1 spent at Tiffany & Co and 3 points per $1 spent at Apple (usually 2 points). Earning points and avoiding the crowds by shopping online? Not bad.
2. Earn points on your grocery shopping
As well as gifts, you're also likely to be forking out for Christmas feast groceries at this time of year. If you want to reward your supermarket shop, you can earn Woolworths Rewards per $1 spent at Woolies and 1 flybuys point per $1 spent at Coles.
When you earn 2,000 points with either program, you can redeem $10 off your shop. You can also exchange these for Qantas Points and Velocity Points respectively.
Coles is rewarding shoppers with 2 Velocity Status Credits when you spend $100 at Coles and Liquorland until 31 December 2018. This is double as many as usual! The standard $1,000 cap applies, so you can earn up to 20 status credits this month.
3. Spend with a frequent flyer or rewards credit card
If you have a frequent flyer or rewards credit card, you have the freedom to earn points on every eligible purchase you make with your card this Christmas.
If you get a new card before the holidays, you may also score thousands of bonus points on sign-up after you meet the spend requirements.
Just make sure that you stick to a budget and aim to repay everything you charge in the lead-up to Christmas. Any interest you collect on your purchases will quickly outweigh the benefit of your reward points, so it's wise to pay your balance in full.
