Money Hack: How to get 12% off Expedia hotel bookings

Posted: 8 August 2018 10:05 am

Pay for your next hotel stay with a Mastercard credit card and unlock this discount on Expedia.

Mastercard gives you access to range of exclusive travel, shopping, dining and lifestyle offers when you have a credit or debit card with the brand's logo on it. At the moment, this includes a promotion with Expedia that gives you 12% off standalone hotel bookings when you pay with an Australian Mastercard credit card.

Considering accommodation is usually one of the most expensive parts of travelling, this discount could save you hundreds of dollars on upcoming getaways.

The Hack

The 12% discount is only available when you’re booking a hotel stay on its own (rather than with flights or other travel options you could add to the booking). You’ll also have to book your stay before 11:59pm on 30 September 2018, for travel dates between now and 31 March 2019.

If that fits with your travel plans, just pull out your Mastercard and head to Search for hotels, choose the one you want to book and click through to the payment page. Above the credit card details, you'll see a link that says "Enter coupon code". Click on it, type in the code (MASTERAU12) and hit "Apply coupon".

The discount will then be applied to your booking and confirmed once you pay with your Mastercard. Below is an example of the message you'll see when the coupon's successfully applied.

Keep in mind that this offer is only available for the first room listed on a booking, so if you’re planning a group getaway it may be better to look at other deals. There are also some hotel exclusions to note, including Hilton Hotels, Holiday Inn, InterContinental Hotels and Crowne Plaza (you can see a full list on the Expedia website).

To put it another way, this offer applies to “Expedia Rate” hotel rooms that you book during the promotional period when you pay with an Australian Mastercard credit card. But even if you’re not sure a booking is eligible, you can still enter the coupon code and click “Apply coupon” to see if it works. Or, if you have a Visa credit or debit card, you could also check out this Money Hack to get 8% off bookings instead.
