Mobile phone contract

Sign up to a contract and get the smartphone of your choice for an additional monthly fee. The cost for the phone will vary depending on the plan you're on and the RRP of the device.

Prepaid plan

Pay in advance for your service and you will never be hit for excess usage charges. Prepaid plans are often cheaper than contracts, though may not include as many features.

SIM-only plan

Just like a prepaid plan, SIM-only plans include a monthly allowance of calls, texts and data, but are charged on a postpaid basis. That means you pay for any excess usage, automatically added to your bill.

Contract plans

Contract plans usually offer more inclusions than a SIM-only plan, but lock you in to the same provider for a fixed number of months. There may be fees to break contract with this type of plan.

How to find the best mobile plan for you

When it comes to choosing a new mobile plan, there are literally hundreds of plans from dozens of providers to compare. With so many options, it's impossible to recommend a single best plan that suits everybody's individual needs. If you are looking to get a new mobile plan, there are some simple questions you can ask yourself before you get started to help make the decision easier:SIM cards

  • How much can you afford to spend each month? Setting your budget up front will help you set expectations for the type of plan you can get, as well as what's included.
  • How much data will you need? The vast majority of mobile plans today come with unlimited calls and texts to Australian numbers, so the biggest differentiator between plans is the amount of included data. To find out how much data you should need, check out our mobile data usage calculator for an estimate according to your habits. If you're streaming Netflix every day, expect to pay for the privilege.
  • Which network delivers the best coverage at your home and office? Believe it or not, but the 4G mobile networks of Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are fairly close when it comes to coverage and speeds, but there are still areas around the country where certain networks struggle. If you can't get service from one network at home, best not sign up for a plan that uses that network.
  • Do you call overseas often? While most plans come with unlimited calls to Australian numbers, the same can't be said for international phone numbers. However, there are a wide range of plans that offer unlimited calls to particular countries, or calls at a massively discounted rate.
  • Do you need a new phone? Smartphones have changed the way the world communicates, and every year phones are getting faster and smarter. While research shows most Australians hold on to their phone for about three years before upgrading, getting a phone on a contract helps break down the costs of a new device over a couple of years, making it friendlier to your bank account.

    Can I keep my mobile phone number on all plans?

      You may still use your number to a prepaid plan if you wish. You can request to port your number to the new provider and subscribe to their prepaid plans. Prepaid has the flexibility to change your recharge amount with every recharge and change your plan online or over the phone.

    In a couple of months my contract is over with Optus. I would like a new phone (not important) 4-5G of data, unlimited SMS and unlimited calls local and interstate on Australian mobile and time to bring just one country which is Greece.

    I have a plan for $44.00 a month unlimited text and calls with 7 GB data. I would be happy with 5 GB. Is there a cheaper plan for my needs? Thank you

    Just need to know if there is/ what there is in internet service for the area code 3433 (Monegeetta, Victoria). I called Telstra and they said there is none.

    Is there a phone company that still operates within Australia? It does my head in that I always have to call and talk to somebody from India who can barely speak English. I want to change my server.

      There are still some Australian telecommunications and mobile phone service providers who have their own support team within Australia but some of the technical or customer support tasks might get assigned to the foreign agents since most companies shift to business process outsourcing nowadays. You can try asking for an Australian or onshore agent if you have a hard time communicating with the foreign agent. Some companies may accommodate you with that request and transfer your call to a local agent.

    I am on the market for a QWERTY keyboard phone with unlimited talk and reasonable data i.e. at least 3-5 GB. I know QWERTY phones have become rare these days. But I really need one since I get a lot of work emails and I don’t personally like answering emails with touch screen phones. Any suggestions please?

    I want to know what the different carriers charge for data over your initial data allowance. The cost of 1 GB seems to vary from place to place. Have you done a comparison like this before?

      Thanks Brodie. The reason I ask is that my mobile service provider charges $10 per 500MB which I think is terribly poor, and a bit of a rip off. So I wanted to see what was comparable in the market, and its not something you see being done by anyone currently.

      We don’t currently have a comparison of excess data charges. Mostly because the standard is $10 for every GB used in excess of your included data with a few edge cases charging $15 per GB.
