What is the Sony Xperia XA2?
Sony first showed off the Xperia XA2 at CES 2018 and some months later it's arrived in Australia, representing the Japanese company's pitch towards the mid-range smartphone crowd.
Sony being Sony doesn't mean that there's a significant compromise in terms of design, with an identifiably Sony-esque "loop surface" design wrapped around its 5.2-inch 1080p display. Under the hood the Xperia XA2 utilises a Snapdragon 630 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, expandable up to 256GB via microSD if that piques your fancy.Back to top
Does the Sony Xperia XA2 have a good camera?
Sony is the primary provider of camera optics for most of the world's premium smartphones, and while the Xperia XA2 sits just outside the premium space, that doesn't mean Sony has entirely ignored it.
Around the back of the Xperia XA2 is a 23MP f/2.0 sensor with support for 4K video recording, stills at up to ISO 12800 sensitivity and 120fps slow-motion shooting. At the front, the Xperia XA2 features an 8MP front camera with a 120-degree wide-angle lens, so your selfies can capture all the detail around you. Or, around you and a group of friends.Back to top
Is the Sony Xperia XA2 water-resistant?
While Sony's top-end handsets feature water resistance, it's not a specific feature of the Sony Xperia XA2. As such, small splashes should be survivable on the surface, but fully immersing your shiny new phone could quickly prove fatal for it.Back to top
When will the Sony Xperia XA2 be available in Australia?
The Sony Xperia XA2 is available now in Australia, either through the Sony Store or via JB Hi-Fi. Keep in mind JB Hi-Fi only sells the Xperia XA2 model in Black, whereas you'll get a wider selection at the Sony Store with availability in silver, black, blue and pink finishes.
There's no word on carrier availability for the Sony Xperia XA2 right now, with Sony Australia officially stating that "Details regarding carrier ranging of the single SIM variant of the product will be shared once available."
Which at least means they're trying to get carriers to offer it on plans, although whether that actually happens remains to be seen. However, if it does, expect for the carrier model to be single SIM only, where the outright model offers dual-SIM capability.Back to top
