What is the Oppo R11s?

The Oppo R11s is Oppo's slightly upgraded take on the existing mid-range priced Oppo R11 that it launched in Australia in August 2017. Like the R11, it's a slender handset with more than a passing resemblance to Apple's iPhone lines, right down to the inclusion of facial detection and Oppo's own very iOS-like ColorOS launcher over standard Android.

Oppo has long traded in this market, providing phones with aspirational style points well below the price points that the more premium brands command.

Where the Oppo R11s markedly differs from the R11 is in the display screen, which has an 18:9 ratio compared to the 16:9 display of its predecessor. Displays of this ratio are becoming more common in the mid-range and budget spaces, but in 2017, they were very much the province of more premium-priced handsets.

Does the Oppo R11s have a good camera?

The Oppo R11 was one of the first mid-range handsets to offer a dual camera array at the rear, and Oppo has refined this with the Oppo R11s. At the rear are two camera lenses, one with a 16MP f/1.7 sensor, and the other with a 20MP f/1.7 sensor. Oppo claims that the 20MP sensor will intelligently recognise night scenes (or any darkened scene) and automatically expand the sensor size to give it considerably greater low-light sensitivity for better shots with less digital noise than what is found on other sensors.

Around the front of the R11s rests a 20MP sensor that rather predictably sells itself on its "beauty" mode. Self-flattering selfie photo modes are nothing new, but Oppo's positioning for the Oppo R11s is that it uses AI to collect 254 different facial features for analysis, leading to better image manipulation than simple facial softening or other tweaks might provide.

Is the Oppo R11s water resistant?

The Oppo R11s isn't specifically rated for water resistance, which means it would be a bad idea to fully immerse it. It should be OK for light rainfall or similar, but anything else is an extremely risky prospect.

When will the Oppo R11s be available in Australia?

Oppo announced the R11s to the world back in October 2017, but it's had a slow global rollout. Oppo is holding a launch event for the R11s in early February 2018, and we'd expect it to hit the Australian market shortly thereafter.

How much will the Oppo R11s cost?

The Oppo R11s will cost $659 outright in Australia. It will also be offered by a range of Australian carriers, including Optus, Vodafone and Woolworths Mobile on contract terms.
