What is the Oppo F1s?

This is the iPhone you get when Apple's asking price is simply too much. From the familiar-looking rose-gold tint to the anodised aluminium back and the fingerprint scanner/home button combination, the Oppo F1s is strongly "inspired" by Apple's technology, but for a fraction of the price. So what you're getting is something that visually looks like the iPhone 7, but without the hit to your wallet that this entails.

The similarities continue beyond a few cosmetic niceties, too. The Oppo F1s runs a custom operating system, Color OS, that draws heavily on the iOS despite using an Android back end.

However, this is not simply a cheap imitation. The Oppo F1s is a surprisingly impressive budget model phone, outperforming many of its competitors and packing quite a decent bang for your buck.

Is the Oppo F1s powerful?

There's actually a surprising amount of grunt under the hood given the price.

The MediaTek MT6750 in the Oppo F1s provides four Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.5GHz and four running at 1.0GHz. The 3GB of RAM is the same as the previous model (the Oppo F1), but the built-in memory has been doubled to 32GB. You can add up to 128GB through the microSD slot, which should better suit the audience Oppo is targeting with the F1s.

Does the Oppo F1s have a good camera?

Labelling the F1 the "selfie expert", this is where Oppo has paid close attention. The budget-priced smartphone features a 16MP front-facing camera, combined with a 1/3.1-inch sensor and a wide f/2.0 aperture lens, designed for "less than ideal" lighting conditions. In case that wasn't enough, you can brighten your skin and remove blemishes using the Beautify 3.0 feature, which also features a number of built-in filters to make your selfies as good as possible.

On the flip side, there's a 13MP camera with a 1/3.06-inch sensor. No, that's not a typo. The front-facing camera actually has better specifications than the rear camera, which promises "wonderful night-time performance".

Despite being the main selling point of the phone, the Oppo F1s cameras do suffer from the budget price point. Camera speed, both digital shutter and post-image processing, aren't quite as fast as you might want, leading to fuzzy out-of-focus shots if you're not careful.

How do I charge the Oppo F1s?

The Oppo F1s does not feature the VOOC fast-charging technology that is used in the F1 Plus and other Oppo models. Instead, the 3075mAh battery uses a standard micro USB cable to charge and takes up to two hours to reach capacity.

Is the Oppo F1s water resistant?

Officially, the Oppo F1s is not water or dust resistant. Some YouTube videos and anecdotal evidence suggests that it may survive small-scale immersion, but we wouldn't suggest you risk it, and it certainly wouldn't be covered by warranty if you actually did it.

When will the Oppo F1s be available in Australia?

The Oppo F1s is available now from a variety of online retailers and also on contract terms.

How much does the Oppo F1s cost?

The Oppo F1s retails in Australia for less than $350, but it depends on where you purchase it. Optus has it pre-paid for $259 while JB has it for $318. In other words, shop around if you're keen.
