What is the Motorola Moto G5 Plus?

Just as with the Motorola Moto G5, the Motorola Moto G5 Plus is essentially a mid-range phone for consumers who don’t want to face the costs of a premium phone but want more performance than most budget phones offer.

Motorola formally announced the Motorola Moto G5 Plus as well as the smaller Moto G5 at Mobile World Congress 2017, but all of the essential specifications had leaked beforehand giving us a clear picture of what to expect beforehand.

Motorola’s Moto G5 Plus is a metal body phone running Android 7.0 on an 2.0GHz Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM depending on model. The display will be a 1080p (1920x1080) LCD panel measuring in at 5.2 inches.

Is the Motorola Moto G5 Plus powerful?

While we’ve yet to have the chance to test the Motorola Moto G5 Plus as yet, we can glean its likely performance based on those specifications alone. The Snapdragon 625 is found in the Huawei Nova Plus and when we tested that phone, we found it to have solid but unspectacular performance.

It’s feasible that the Motorola Moto G5 Plus may have an edge on Huawei’s mid-range phone, because it comes with the highly optimised Android 7.0 ("Nougat") operating system and, if Motorola acts to form, relatively little in the way of bloatware. Huawei uses its own Emotion UI as the launcher for its phones, and that brings with it some performance overhead. Still, you shouldn’t look to the Motorola Moto G5 Plus if you want blazing performance, but for everyday tasks it should be adequate.

Does the Motorola Moto G5 Plus have a good camera?

Motorola differentiates the Motorola Moto G5 Plus from the regular model by way of screen size, processor and camera specifications. Motorola’s Moto G5 Plus features a 12MP rear sensor with autofocus, and while numbers aren’t the whole game, that should give it a slight bump up from the regular Moto G5. We’ll need to test it properly to discern the full picture, but typically Motorola’s camera optics have always delivered decent rather than stellar pictures.

How do I charge the Motorola Moto G5 Plus?

The Moto G5 Plus sticks with the older microUSB charging standard as distinct from the newer USB C plug. That's got a compatibility benefit with older chargers, although it does mean you've got to align the charger plug correctly. The Moto G5 Plus supports Motorola's Turbo charging with a supplied rapid charger in the box.

Is the Motorola Moto G5 Plus water resistant?

The Motorola Moto G5 Plus has a water repellant coating. That’s a carefully chosen set of words, because it doesn’t mean that it is water resistant. That means that the Moto G5 Plus probably won't survive full immersion, but it should be fine if you’re briefly caught in a rain shower.

When will the Motorola Moto G5 Plus be available in Australia?

Alongside the Moto G5, the Motorola Moto G5 Plus went on direct sale in Australia on 27 April 2017.

How much will the Motorola Moto G5 Plus cost?

Motorola sells two variants of the Motorola Moto G5 Plus in Australia. $399 buys you a model with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage, while $449 ups those specifications to 4GB RAM and 32GB of storage respectively. Both handsets are sold through Motorola's online Australian store, as well as through Harvey Norman, Good Guys and Officeworks.
