What is the Huawei P20 Pro?
Huawei's 2018 flagship line has its "hero" device in the form of the Huawei P20 Pro, announced in Paris on 27 March 2018.
The P20 Pro matches up the Kirin 970 processor found in the existing Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, along with an 6GB of storage. That's a potent combination, especially given Huawei's strong focus on AI-assisted processing to make its phones even more rapid.
In terms of design, the Huawei P20 Pro features a very iPhone X-style "notched" display. The P20 Pro comes in a range of colours, including a graduated colour scheme that changes as light goes across it. As always, we may not see every single colour variant of the P20 Pro here in Australia when it comes to market. Smart money says that we still see the Black variant, though.
The P20 Pro range features 18:9 aspect ratio displays using an OLED display while the rest of the P20 range simply uses LCD. It's also the largest of the P20 family, with a 6.1 inch display, compared to the 5.8 inch P20 or 5.6 inch P20 Lite.
Does the Huawei P20 Pro have a good camera?
It doesn't just have one good camera, but three. The key differentiator across the P20 family is be the cameras that each comes equipped with. As the "Pro" model, you can expect the best features, and in this case that means even more lenses to play with.
The P20 Pro is has a primary rear lens with an incredible 40MP sensor. More megapixels doesn't automatically equate to a better photographic experience, but then Huawei's pitching what it's calling "Hybrid Zoom" on the P20 Pro, thanks to the addition of an 8MP 3x optical zoom lens.
How do you get from 3x to 5x? Typically you'd do that by digitally blowing up the individual pixels, which isn't always that smooth a process, but when you've got 40MP to burn, there's a lot more scope for cropping to achieve magnification effects, at the cost of lower resolution pictures.
The third lens on the P20 Pro is a 20MP monochrome lens, which works both for straight black and white photography as well as in a hybrid mode as with previous Huawei phones for more tonal difference across regular photos.
The cameras on the P20 Pro are Leica branded, in line with Leica's long affiliation with Huawei
In terms of the front camera, the P20 Pro features a 24MP sensor with AI features for beautification. Huawei's using AI extensively across its cameras for everything from image recognition to image stabilization, although the 8MP 3x telephoto lens does feature optical image stabilisation.
Is the Huawei P20 Pro water resistant?
Huawei's track record with water resistance is a spotty one in the premium space, but it's certainly capable of delivering phones with inbuilt water resistance.
The Huawei P20 Pro is the member of its family with full IP67 water resistance. That means that immersion in clean water shouldn't be a major issue with this handset, although it's not advised to push that all that far. A drop in water is fine, but keeping it underwater for photography purposes isn't advised.
When will the Huawei P20 Pro be available in Australia?
Huawei announced the P20 Pro in Paris on 27 March 2018, and it's indicated that Australia will be amongst the first launch markets, although it's yet to formally say when that might be.
How much will the Huawei P20 Pro cost?
Huawei's pricing for its flagships has generally tended to be highly competitive, but what we've seen across the broad flagship space is a rise in handset pricing at or above the $1,500 price point. While Huawei hasn't announced absolute Australian pricing, based on overseas prices for the P20 Pro, we'd expect to see it land here at between $1400-$1600.
Huawei has had some luck placing its flagship phones with Australian carriers, typically either Optus or Vodafone. Again, there's no specific word right now, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the P20 Pro offered on contract terms when it does launch in Australia.
