When does the Huawei Nova 2i come out? Available in Australia from 25 October 2017
What’s new about the Huawei Nova 2i? 18:9 Full HD display, 4 cameras, Kirin 659 processor
How much does the Huawei Nova 2i cost? $499 outright
What is the Huawei Nova 2i?
Huawei has its premium lines, in the fashion-centric P series and productivity-focused Mate series phones, while its Nova branding has typically been used for more mid-range efforts. The Huawei Nova 2i, also sold in some markets as the Huawei Mate 10 Lite or Maimang 6, is a mid-range, large screened handset with a focus on photography and "fun".
The Huawei Nova 2i features a full screen 18:9 aspect ratio display measuring 5.9 inches, so it's quite large. While many budget and mid-range handsets opt for 1080p or lower resolutions, the Nova 2i features a Full HD+ (2160 X 1080) display to show off content. As is the premium style for 2017, bezels are kept to a minimum on the Nova 2i, with only very small bezels at the top and bottom, meaning that you're holding a phone that's mostly display screen and very little else.
The Huawei Nova 2i is an Android phone running Android 7.0 with Huawei's own EMUI 5.1 overlay running over the top. It features a rear mounted fingerprint sensor for unlocking, as well as Huawei's Histen audio system for automatic audio equalisation depending on the audio source being listened to.
Is the Huawei Nova 2i powerful?
Huawei has opted for its own Kirin silicon for the Nova 2i, where for many of its lower-cost phones it has tended to use externally sourced budget processors. The Kirin 659 at the heart of the Nova 2i is an octa-core processor matched up with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage.
That's a solid enough recipe for a smartphone in the mid-range to low premium space, but we'll have to wait until we've had the chance to fully test out the Nova 2i to give it a full assessment.
Does the Huawei Nova 2i have a good camera?
The Huawei Nova 2i's big party trick is that it's the first phone you'll be able to buy in Australia with not one, two or even three onboard cameras, but instead four. What you get is dual lenses on both sides, with a primary 16MP rear and 13MP front camera both paired with 2MP secondary lenses.
What that should mean in photographic terms is that the Nova 2i should be a very solid competitor in the mid-range space, but it's not likely to seriously challenge the premium camera heavyweights, including Huawei's own expected upcoming Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro.
How do I charge the Huawei Nova 2i?
The 3340mAh battery on the Huawei Nova 2i charges via micro USB at its base, but you don't get features such as wireless charging.
Is the Huawei Nova 2i water resistant?
We've seen evidence of Huawei testing phones for water resistance in our tour of its R&D labs, but the Nova 2i must have skipped testing school that day, with no stated water resistance. It should be fine for very light moisture, but full immersion isn't advisable.
When will the Huawei Nova 2i be available in Australia?
The Huawei Nova 2i will go on sale in Australia in October 2017.
How much does the Huawei Nova 2i cost?
The Huawei Nova 2i will retail in Australia at $499 outright, on sale through JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman from 25 October 2017. That version will be dual SIM capable.
Vodafone will also offer a single SIM version of the Nova 2i to its customers in November 2017. It's not yet clear if Vodafone will simply retail the Nova 2i for its higher-end prepaid customers, or offer it on contract.
