Milkman Grooming Co’s After Shave Serum is the alcohol-free aftershave you’ve been looking for
It’s not out of the ordinary for blokes to have a pretty spartan cabinet of products for the beautification of the skin. But the Milkman Grooming Co Aftershave Serum is definitely a bottle you should have within arm's reach.
Milkman Grooming Co Australia is the brainchild of company co-founder Dr Ben de Campo, who created the aftershave as a home-brewed solution. Dr de Campo decanted his delightful draught into a home-grown company designed to dynamically ditch the itch felt from the common beard. The result is an aftershave mix that was designed to act not only as a nice post-shave product, but also as a beard and skin softening moisturiser, and it works as well as it reads.
Much like everyone’s beard preference, everyone’s shaving regime is slightly different. For the last 10 years, I’ve been using a straight-edge razor to shave my neck and shape my beard, and using a trimmer to control the length elsewhere. My post-shave products came from a variety of tubes and bottles, including a Kiehl’s post-shave balm, a Calvin Klein aftershave and a Clinique for Men beard softener and moisturiser. However, no matter how you shave, this After Shave Serum from Milkman is designed to be an everyday product that softens up your beard and keeps you smelling fresh (but not overly-fragrant) and dealing with redness all at once.
Most aftershaves are designed to fill the pores with fragrance after a shave, which is traditionally an excruciating experience that was canonised by Kevin McAllister in Home Alone sampling his father’s products. Aside from the typical sting, products with a high alcohol content can actually make you age faster. This is not exactly a feature you want in your skincare products. Milkman Grooming Co. differs in that it swaps out the alcohol content for a series of moisturising ingredients, you know, stuff that is actually good for your skin! This makes it an indispensable 2-in-1 for the bathroom.
Normally I’m not a huge believer in “all-in-one” products when it comes to taking care of my dry, red-prone skin, but in this instance, the Milkman delivers. The serum is chock full of aloe vera, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid which add moisture, and also witch hazel and allantoin which solve post-shave skin irritation. That means it has gone ahead and replaced three of my products (moisturising beard softener, aftershave and post-shave balm) in the one bottle. And at just $40, it combines them for a fraction of the price. You don’t have to use a lot, either, so that $40 bottle is going to last you a long time.
And if you’re not a huge fan of smelling like a summer breeze, Milkman also has seasonal scents including Spring Rider and the upcoming Autumn Leaves.
So whether you’re growing a mega-beard, a monster mo’ or a basic beard, Milkman is a product that keeps the bloke who doesn’t want a cupboard full of creams and bottles looking, smelling and feeling good after a shave.
