Microsoft Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 | Australian price and release date

Information verified correct on December 8th, 2016

Microsoft has added two new models to its popular Surface line of hybrid notebook/tablets, including the first to come with a built-in keyboard.

The Surface Book, which is essentially a touch-screen laptop, will be priced at $2,299 in Australia. Its 13.5in screen is the largest ever seen on a Surface model, and it claims a battery life of up to 12 hours. It continues a trend of tablet-like devices sporting larger screens which we've also seen with the forthcoming iPad Pro.

The Surface Pro 4 will cost $1,349. Like its predecessors, it doesn't ship with a keyboard, but you can purchase one to attach to it. It's slightly lighter than its predecessor, despite having a bigger screen (12.3in rather than 12in).

If you're after a less powerful device, the basic $699 Surface also remains available.

Microsoft says orders placed through its online store will ship by 12 November. It will also be on sale at Microsoft's Sydney-based retail store which opens that day.  Microsoft will also have the Surface Pro 4 available directly through Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi stores on 12 November.

With its 12.3-inch PixelSense touchscreen, Windows 10 operating system and interchangeable Surface Pen tips, the Surface Pro 4 looks to improve upon every aspect that made its predecessor so popular.

If you're keen on the Surface Book, however, your choices are significantly more limited. Microsoft will initially make the Surface Book available in Australia only through its Sydney retail store from 12 November, or via pre-order from its online store.

Microsoft representatives have stated that the popularity of the device means that they're reluctant to offer it to wider retailers at launch in order to avoid having limited quantities at any given retailer.

Microsoft does expect to have "significant" quantities of Surface Book to sell at the Microsoft retail store when it opens, but declined to quantify precisely what "significant" meant, so if you're particularly keen (and you're already in Sydney) some queuing may be in order.
