Buyers are clearly waking up to the idea of an affordable, well-specced vehicle that has a few slight drawbacks, but many, many positives to outweigh the negatives. Externally, both the ZS and the ZST look like stylish and modern cars. Also worth looking at is MG's ZS EV, the cheapest electric vehicle in Australia that's based on the ZS, but was awarded a 5-star ANCAP rating in 2019 and can travel up to 263km on a single charge of its battery.

This naturally aspirated engine appears to be jointly developed by Opel (who made the last generation of Holdens), Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC - MG's owners), MG Motor, Shanghai General Motors (a venture between General Motors and SAIC), as well as the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC).
The engine has a modest 84kW at 6,000RPM and 150Nm at 4,500RPM.
This engine has a turbocharger and Netblue technology, which first debuted on the MG GS.
This small 3-cylinder petrol engine has 115kW between 5,200-5,600RPM and possesses 230Nm between 1,800-4,400RPM.

Car reviewers' impressions of the MG ZS engine and transmission line-up
A tester driving a ZS Essence (with the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder engine) described it as lively and animated. They found the torque was readily accessible and the engine was easily adequate for the weight and size of the ZS. Around town, this tester decided the ZS was in its element. The 6-speed automatic teamed up with this engine reportedly shifts gears responsively and generally does its job as you'd expect. Even at higher speeds, this car reviewer described the ZS as not having to work too hard.
Another motoring journalist, testing the MG ZST, said the small SUV's mass meant the 1.3-litre was perfectly adequate. They too found the engine was generally underworked most of the time. The whole powertrain is apparently reactive. However, they did comment that the 6-speed automatic had not won them over, as it often picked the wrong gear at inopportune times!
A third tester declared the ZST was a big improvement over the ZS. They likened its powertrain to the naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre petrol engines of rivals. They were big proponents of the automatic, saying it helped to extract maximum performance from the engine.
A fourth expert labelled the ZS engine as feeble, while the ZST was stirring. They went as far as saying it was a tremendous engine, even unexpectedly snappy and silky. They went further by exclaiming it was better than the equivalent Mercedes-Benz A-Class engine. If true, that's quite an achievement on MG's part!

Here's what the MG ZS is like on fuel.
According to the Green Vehicle Guide (GVG), this engine, as fitted to the base model ZS Excite, uses the following amounts of fuel:
Going by those figures, the GVG estimates that if you travel 14,000kms annually, two-thirds of the time in a city, you'll spend $1,536 on petrol.
The smaller of the turbocharged petrol engines, found in the ZS Excite Plus and Essence, has the following fuel economy figures:
Using the comparison conditions as above, you'd spend $1,435 on petrol per year. On paper, that means these are the most economical of the MG ZS and ZST range.

Be aware of factory fuel economy figures
Carmakers have to subject their vehicles to a standardised testing procedure. This test allows you as a buyer to compare different vehicles, from different manufacturers, as they've both been through the same protocol.
However, because it's a laboratory test, the conditions are strictly controlled. On real-world roads, the mechanical condition of your car, how much weight you're carrying, the weather and traffic volumes all impact achievable fuel economy. As a result, it's quite normal to see slightly higher fuel usage than the brochures suggest.
How did the MG ZS and ZST fare on fuel then? One journalist, driving a ZS Essence, recorded a higher 0.2-litres rate of burn than the brochure claims, which is pretty good compared with some other vehicles.
Another, testing a ZST, recorded figures within 1.0L/100km of the brochure figures. That's again fairly reasonable when compared with other vehicle marques. A third motoring journalist logged fuel economy figures very close to the brochure numbers, so it seems the ZST brochure figures check out.
At the affordable end of the car segment, handling isn't always what you'd want it to be. However, it seems both the ZS and ZST outperformed the assumptions of car reviewers.
One tester, who drove the ZS, commented that its ride is the standout attribute. Evidently, they felt it was responsive, with comfortable suspension that tackles potholes and silent cops commendably. Around town, they also stated the suspension configuration worked really well.
A ZST tester summed the handling up as acceptably nimble. They observed some body roll in corners, but given this is a higher-sided SUV bodystyle, that's understandable. Even so, they added that they didn't mind it at all. According to this journalist, all-around disc brakes mean the ZST slows down in a controlled and abbreviated manner. However, the ride comfort wasn't to their taste. In their opinion, the suspension was working overtime to try and keep the ZST damped, but it was still acceptable in their eyes.
Another ZST reviewer said the highlights were the improvements made over the ZS. However, even though they said it was definitely ambitious and able to challenge its rivals, they wanted to see more done on the engineering side. Steering, in their mind, was imprecise, while the ride was labelled squishy. They wanted a firmer brake pedal response too.
A fourth reviewer came away commenting that the MG ZS wasn't as fun to drive as some of its competitors. They said MG just missed the mark on making an SUV that was still involving to drive. They did add, though, that for an SUV, handling isn't a huge concern and that the ZS does just fine.
A final reviewer, who was given a ZST, assessed the handling as predominantly good. They said it was grippy, quick turning, decently balanced and ran on reputable, branded tyres. They longed for a locally-tuned suspension set-up like Hyundai and Kia opt for.
Finder's Alex Jeffs backed these sentiments up when he test drove an MG ZST.
On different surfaces, the suspension can be quite active, but for the daily city commute, you aren't going to notice this all too much. The same can be said for the bit of body roll that occurs when cornering. All told, I can't see many reasons why the ZST wouldn't help build on MG's success.
Steering is direct, but it does lack a bit of feedback. However, it manoeuvres quite well with grippy Michelin tyres that come as standard.
MG is gunning for established rivals in the SUV segment. It's offering a lot of equipment and tech, for not a lot of coin.
There are a total of four trim grades (as of May 2021, when MG removed the ZS Excite Plus) across the MG ZS and ZST. Both models now have two specifications each, Excite and Essence.
What did car reviewers think of the MG ZS interior?
It seems all the MG ZS testers were given Essence-specced press cars. This is a higher spec than the Excite model below it. Studying their impressions, we came away with the notion that they were pretty impressed.
One reviewer said the car will exceed your expectations. The testers judged the interior as sophisticated, exceeding its price point and with a very high standard of equipment and materials employed throughout. The infotainment system is reportedly designed well and has a crisp appearance. A special mention was made of the reverse camera distance readout that appears once you're within a metre of an object. The synthetic leather attracted high praise all around. In the back seats, testers said there was adequate space for two average-sized humans. They did think that sandwiching in a third tall person would make things overly cramped back there. This reviewer also knocked the cabin back for the loud A/C system, which operates satisfactorily, but seems to make a noticeable noise as it switches on and off. They also longed for a digital speedometer.
A second motoring journalist felt the interior build quality was perfunctory at best and variable. They noticed some interior plastic trim pieces can wobble, adding that they didn't get the sense the interior was well assembled, at least on their press cars. They also knocked the ZS down for lacking steering wheel reach adjustment and commented on what they described as less than stellar sound quality from the 6-speaker audio system. This reviewer went on to say there could be more interior storage pockets and wished some of the stowage areas present were larger.
Practicality wise, the MG ZS performed well in the eyes of reviewers But, they did pick up on the fact that you can't fold the rear seats flat and that there is a deep load lip you have to lift luggage over.
What's the MG ZST like inside?
It seems the ZST is considered broadly as a step forward over the ZS. The only fault one tester could pick with the layout for the driver was the omission of steering reach adjustment. The same reviewer also griped that the touchscreen was positioned 25-50mm from where they'd want it to be.
They poured praise on the number of USB ports (five in total), calling out the genius inclusion of one plug specifically for dash cams. However, the same tester said the interior wasn't hugely pioneering, but that it was neat-looking, sensible and practical. Specifically called out was the all-round visibility, which can be hampered by the design trend of chunky C pillars, but this evidently isn't the case on the ZST.
One reviewer applauded the ZST's larger 10.1-inch touchscreen. They really liked the Essence specification, which has a digital dash that was so often yearned for with the older ZS.
The extra safety tech, such as MG Pilot, on the ZST, was more than welcome. Other areas that lost points for the interior, in the opinion of car journalists, were a lack of rear air vents (typical of the lower-end models) and the carbon-effect trim-pieces.
On the topic of comfort, most reviewers said the ZST was satisfactory. While reviewers felt there was enough leg, head and foot room in the back, the seatbacks are apparently too reclined, with a slab-bottom that doesn't make it hugely comfortable.
Testers' thoughts suggested the sound quality was better on the audio system in the ZST.
Overall, the MG ZST's interior appears to score well with car experts, while the ZS did okay.

Looking at the ZS and ZST, you'd think MG is running a permanent EOFY sale and adding a mate's rate discount on top. The ZS is seriously affordable, while the ZST still delivers a big bang for your buck. It seems the ZST is really a jack of all trades kind of car. It looks good, is specced well, drives nicely and is acceptably practical.
The letdowns are few and far between. But, there's that inescapable 4-star ANCAP rating for a start. And fuel economy isn't anything to write home about. Some of the testers raised minor concerns with the interior build quality, but you have to remember that this is a budget SUV. When viewed from that context, it's an attractive proposition and you should at least test drive one if you're looking for a family SUV to see how it measures up.
