With Meta Watch you get a fashionable watch first, and a smartwatch second.
Meta Watch is a small startup company that has big plans for the smartwatch. A prior subsidiary to Fossil Watch, the Dallas based Meta Watch Ltd. did like many others, and used a crowdfunding site to get their idea of a smartwatch off of the ground.
The first generation of Meta Watch smartwatches were released in 2011 as a development system. There were two separate models, one using an OLED display and the other digital, that served as prototypes for the next round of smartwatches introduced by Meta Watch. The Strata MetaWatch and Frame MetaWatch were released in 2012 after a successful crowdfunding event through the Kickstarter website.
Meta Watch manager is unique to Meta Watch and enables the wearer to view the notifications that are pushed from the smartphone. The latest version of MetaWatch Manager, 1.3, is able to support Apple iOS. MetaFilter peruses the apps that are installed on the smartphone so that you can choose which are important enough to show up on your watch.
After the release of the MetaWatch Frame and MetaWatch Strata, Meta Watch Ltd. introduced its premium META brand. This was the start of a focus on beautiful and premium smartwatches, as well as fully functional smartphone companions. In August of 2014 New Age Electronics announced that they would be the exclusive distributor of the smartwatches’ META line. New Age Electronics is a major distribution network for a number of well known companies like HP, Toshiba and XBOX.

The Meta Watch range
The Strata MetaWatch
The lowest priced smartwatch offered by Meta Watch Ltd., the Strata is sporty in style, with a thick body and rubber wristband. The display is a one inch square with 96 x 96 pixel that uses a polymer network LCD. This gives the text a mirror-like appearance that defines the edges of text to make reading easier.
The Frame MetaWatch
Often compared to the Pebble, the Frame MetaWatch has a larger display than the Strata, and a higher price tag. The display is 1.5 inches, but still not a touch screen. Instead, you use buttons placed on the side to scroll through the menus of the smartwatch and choose what you want by pressing down. The Frame face is encased in metal, and comes in either black or white with a leather band.
The META M1 is clearly more interested in looks than in brains. It will connect to our smartphone through Bluetooth and push notifications through, but you are not able to command it with your voice, or even count how many steps you took today. This is the solution for those who want a good looking watch that lets you know what is going on with your mobile phone without having to pull it out of your pocket.
META M1 was designed by Frank Nuovo, the former head of the luxury phone manufacturer Vertu, and is an all metal body with unique design features that help in making the various buttons not stand out. These buttons are used to operate the smartwatch since like its predecessors, the META M1 smartwatch does not have a touch screen. The basic model comes with a rubber wristband, but you can get a leather or steel band to complete the high-end watch look.Back to top
The Meta Watch Ltd app store
The lack of an app store and availability of apps makes it quite obvious that the smartwatches produced by Meta Watch Ltd. are not going to get busy in functionality anytime soon. Instead, they will fashionable wearables that provide the user only with pertinent notifications from their smartphone, and a small number of apps that make sense to have on a smartwatch. This is not a smartwatch that was packaged inside of a wearable, but rather a precision designed fashion accessory that has been given modern functions to help you stay connected.Back to top
The future for Meta Watch Ltd.
In addition to its exclusive distribution deal with New Age Electronics, Meta Watch Ltd. has other exciting plans in store for 2015. In order to make their smartwatch more appealing for the fitness minded, they have partnered with experts from Misfit to bring basic exercise and sleep tracking to the META M1. Misfit is a respected wearables manufacturer focusing on activity tracking during the day.
Users of this feature will have the choice of a basic mode or enhanced mode. For those who choose the advanced mode, the META manager will create a free Misfit account for you so that you can benefit from all of the tracking features. You will even be able to download the Misfit app for iOS or Android to get a detailed history of your fitness activities.
Meta Watch is not too busy being smart that it forgets to look like a watch. The capabilities are just at the edge of what other smartwatches are able to do, but light years ahead when it comes to looking like a fashionable wearable first. This is a company to keep your eyes on as they have cornered a niche of the smartwatch market that the bigger names have yet to appease.Back to top
