Met Gala 2016: The 10 best futuristic ensembles and their designers
The Met Gala, also known as the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala, is fashion’s night of night. It’s an evening where couture is normcore, innovation is the new black and whimsy runs free.
Held every year on the first Monday of May, the event sees both the biggest names in design and in Hollywood step out and get glitzed up for the night. Each Met Gala is a celebration of the annual exhibit at the Institute, using the exhibition title as the dress code inspiration.
This year’s exhibit and theme is Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology, and many invitees absolutely rose to the occasion. Whilst it’s not explicitly stated that guests must dress to theme, major props are always given to those who try and nail it.
This year’s theme inspired some truly innovative, futuristic and breath-taking ensembles that deserve to be celebrated. Here are our top ten best dressed celebrities at the 2016 Met Gala who captured the Manus x Machina theme and killed it.
10. Emma Watson in Calvin Klein Collection
Although it's hard to hate anything on the beautiful Emma Watson, we particularly love this two piece ensemble for its elegance and futuristic structure. Plus it's made from sustainable and recycled materials.
9. Liu Wen in Iris Van Herpen
This elaborately constructed dress is one part mermaid and one part robot. It's feminine and edgy. We love it.
8. Lupita Nyong'o in Calvin Klein Collection
Fashion darling Lupita never fails. Her pale green, metallic gown fit her perfectly. We even loved the hair, which lent a futuristic grunge to her feminine dress.
7. Rita Ora in Vera Wang
This silvery, feathered creation is beyond perfect for this event and Rita looked like a goddess in it.
6. Emily Ratajkowski in Prabal Gurung
Em Rata is another fashion darling that can do no wrong. Her black and white frock was daring, innovative and elegant.
5. Gigi Hadid in Tommy Hilfiger
Gigi dressed to the technological and futuristic theme without looking like a caricature - something that isn't easy. Everything about this is amazing.
4. Jourdan Dunn in Balmain
Jourdan was far from the only star in Balmain but she was certainly one of the stand-outs. The amazing detailing on this slinky, silvery dress took our breath away.
3. Poppy Delevingne in Marchesa
Poppy was an absolute vision in this artwork by Marchesa. The layered skirt and metallic beading is everything and more.
2. Jenna Lyons, Jennifer Konner and Lena Dunham - a three-way tie
We love this alternative interpretation of the theme. These matching ensembles are edgy and androgynous in the best possible way. These ladies absolutely killed it.
1. Claire Danes in Zac Posen
Her simply stunning, Cinderella-esque dress glows in the dark. GLOWS IN THE DARK. Need we say more.
