Beauty product of the week: Medical microdermabrasion
See why you should try microdermabrasion, if you haven't already.
Why we love this treatment
I recently had my first ever microdermabrasion treatment. I'd heard a lot of things from a lot of people before going in. I was told that it hurts. Some said it's bad for darker skin. Another said the results aren't that good.
Well, it doesn't hurt, it's great for all skin and I thought the results were awesome.
Microdermabrasion is essentially a very intense exfoliation. There are two methods: abrasive crystals are sprayed on your skin and a vacuum is used to suck up the dead skin they remove, or an abrasive little disk is rotated around your face to remove the top layer of dead skin.
I had both treatments in my session at the Sydney Cosmetic Clinic. The actual procedure itself was lovely. It was a bit like a facial. At some points the crystals felt a little scratchy but it was mostly relaxing and a nice way to unwind at the end of a week. You can see a video of me during the treatment below.
The results were great. They're not immediately noticeable but you certainly see them the next morning. My skin was the brightest and clearest I think I've ever seen it. It was a kind of radiance no foundation could ever achieve. I went into the treatment with two spots on my forehead and they were miraculously completely gone. My skin was smooth, free from roughness and congestion. It was a great feeling. This is definitely the kind of treatment I would get again if I had an event coming up where I wanted to look extra glowy.
My skin technician Bettina told me that if you regularly get microdermabrasion treatments that you can experience other benefits like smaller pores, less darkness under the eyes and an improvement in any skin discolouration. I totally believe it too. There was such a drastic improvement in my skin after one treatment that I see how multiple treatments could give such positive benefits.
Microdermabrasion is one of those treatment where the pricing depends on where you go. I've seen treatments for $60 and I've seen some for $300. With beauty treatments, you generally get what you pay for so I probably wouldn't pick a treatment in the low price range. My treatment was $150 and I think that's fair. It's not exactly the most affordable beauty solution out there but I think it was worth the money.
Where you can get it
I had my treatment at the Sydney Cosmetic Clinic - they were great, right in the middle of the CBD too. But there are lots of other clinics and salons that offer this service if you're not located in Sydney.
