Marriott opens its first 5-star luxury villas in Fiji
Take a walk through the world's newest top resort. It comes complete with overwater bungalows.
Momi Bay might well be one of the most picturesque places on the islands -- and no doubt a lot of big hotels were eyeing it.
Located on the western coast of Vitu Levu, it's fairly secluded, but is still only a 45 minute drive from an international airport, and is within easy reach of the usual Fijian attractions like natural hot springs, mud baths, surfing spots and adventure spots.
Luxury hotel chain Marriott ended up winning it and today opened its very first venture in Fiji on it called Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay.
Perhaps the most distinctive aspect about this 5-star resort is its 22 over-water villas. These are the only ones of their kind on the mainland and stretch over 20 hectares of man-made designer lagoons where guests can lounge and dive directly.
There are also 92 other villas on dry land and 132 deluxe rooms that can be interconnected as needed for families and groups.
All rooms were built with open plan designs to take advantage of Fiji's year-around pristine weather and designed with a fusion of traditional and modern styles.
It's more than just a place to stay, however. The resort boasts an impressive list of amenities and features including two nearby golf courses, tennis courts and naturally a range of watersports.
Marriott hasn't skimped on the food either. There are three restaurants, including a seafood specialist, a more laid back restaurant and bar and one with open-kitchen cooking stations where you can get your meals made to order and engage with chefs directly. These are then rounded off with the resort's own bakery and delicatessen.
Marriott is focusing particularly on the event and function travellers such as those planning on having a destination wedding, with outdoor functional space and a grand ballroom, as well as its own expert event planners available for guests.
Needless to say, there are also childcare facilities that go beyond being just a daycare and actually deliver interactive programs for kids, making it all the easier for parents to slip away to the adults-only infinity pool and swim-up bar, or any of the other pools or spa and massage centers.
Fiji is known for its abundance of resort options. While the Marriott hotels are closer to the upper end of the price scale, flights to Fiji are still remarkably affordable and there are plenty of accommodation options to suit almost anyone.
