Livepeer is an Ethereum-based protocol that provides an open-source video transcoding service, which reformats videos to suit multiple bandwidths and playback formats.
According to Livepeer’s website, the platform wants to make streaming decentralised while providing an economic and secure infrastructure for videos. By leveraging a two-layer consensus mechanism, Livepeer claims to greatly reduce video transcoding and streaming costs compared to legacy methods. It is packaged as a scalable Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) product that can be utilised by businesses who want to add live or on-demand video.
LPT is the native token of the Livepeer network and is essential to the Delegated Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. Users can stake LPT tokens to secure and support the network, either as Orchestrators (donate computing power), Transcoders (reformat videos) or Delegators (donate LPT tokens to an Orchestrator). By staking LPT tokens, it incentivises all parties to act for the good of the network. The LPT token is also used for governance of the Livepeer protocol.
