Ireland head into the tournament as the number 1 team in the world.

Many will be astonished to find out Ireland will begin the 2019 Rugby World Cup as the number one ranked team. It's the first time ever that the Irish will do so. The side have experienced a resurgence over the last two years and taken everyone by storm.

With a shamrock emblazoned on the chest of a bright green uniform, it's impossible to mistake who's playing. Led by incumbent World Rugby Player of the Year Jonathan Sexton, the squad has a mix of youth and experience.

Although the Irish have a history of failing to meet expectations in the tournament, they come in better than ever. For evidence of this, look no further than the fact Ireland have beaten the mighty All Blacks in each of the last two years.

In the two final tune-up practices against Wales, the Irish outfit prevailed in both. Before that a flat performance against England resulted in a hiding, but fans will be hopeful it was nothing more than a blip on the radar. The first game in the pool is Ireland vs Scotland, which is sure to be a fiery clash between the fierce rivals.

The past trends of the competition are both for and against captain Rory Best and his team. Only once has a team not ranked as number one in the world taken out the Webb Ellis Cup. Yet, Ireland have never managed to accomplish a knockout stage victory.

So one way or another Ireland will be almost destined to break a record through either success or failure.
