LG debuts LG V30s ThinQ at MWC 2018

LG's V30s ThinQ smartphone leans heavily on the "smart" part of "phone".

LG has formally announced its latest smartphone ahead of its MWC launch event here in Barcelona today, and if nothing else, it's likely to be the smartphone with the longest name announced at the big mobile conference.

The LG V30s ThinQ is an upgraded version of the LG V30 (and LG V30+ that we saw in Australia) that LG had already tipped was on its way for MWC 2018.

The branding is in line with LG's ThinQ initiatives announced at CES 2018, bringing artificial intelligence across its entire product portfolio.

In the case of the LG V30s ThinQ, that's AI with a strong focus on photography, with three new AI-assisted shooting modes available for the new handset. The AI CAM mode will automatically pick the "best" shooting mode for a given scene, something that competitor products such as Huawei's Mate 10 already manage.

QLENs is an AI-assisted QR code scanning feature for optimised online shopping that promises to scan for best prices on whatever it's looking at, as well as suggesting alternative similar products based on image recognition. Finally, LG's Bright Mode will optimise low light images through algorithmic analysis for less noise.

The LG V30s ThinQ also features new exclusive AI commands for Google Assistant, largely focused around using the new camera modes.

The LG V30s ThinQ will also see something of a memory boost over the LG V30, with the regular model featuring 128GB of onboard storage and the LG V30s+ ThinQ running with 256GB. Both models feature 6GB of RAM, so like their predecessors, the only difference in the "plus" model is that extra storage space. The LG V30s ThinQ runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 SoC with Android 8.0 on board.

LG hasn't announced availability of the LG V30s ThinQ outside of Korea at this stage, so if you're particularly keen to get one quickly, you may have to look to import. We're reporting from MWC 2018 all week, so stay tuned for our hands-on impressions of the new LG V30s ThinQ.
