Leaked screenshots and concept art emerge from cancelled Legacy of Kain title

Leaked screenshots and concept art shed more light on cancelled Legacy of Kain entry, Dead Sun.

In October, we spoke to Rise of The Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics about the future of the Legacy of Kain series.

Senior designer Michael Brinker gave hope that the gothic-horror series is very much still alive and on the minds of the good people at Crystal Dynamics, claiming there was a 50/50 chance of a sequel arriving this generation.

Well, the beloved action-adventure series has arisen from the dead once again with a recent leak of screenshots and concept art from the cancelled sequel Dead Sun.  The screenshots below come from Neogaf user Mama Robotnik who has put an insane amount of effort into digging up the remains of 10 cancelled titles Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun and Legacy of Kain: The Dark Prophecy.  BWCewy5

Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun was being developed by Climax Studios (Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories) for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360. Dead Sun was to be set long after the events depicted in the Legacy of Kain series and would feature two entirely new protagonists, Gein and Asher, a vampire and a human whose souls are entwined as they travel to the land of Nosgoth.

A multiplayer component of Dead Sun was also in development by Psyonix (Rocket League), the remains of which were eventually salvaged and reimagined as multiplayer title Nosgoth, released last year.

The key players behind the development of Dead Sun are respected and each had their own following, including would be game director, the innovative storyteller Sam Barlow (Her Story and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories).  With such a strong team at the helm (who have each gone on to do magnificent things in their respective fields), many believe that Dead Sun would have been the single-player follow-up the series deserved after the popular Blood Omen 2

According to an unknown source who contacted Mama Robotnik, the envisioned follow-up would be set in an alternate timeline.

The vampire lord Kain, at some point after the climax of Legacy of Kain: Defiance (the final released single-player game in the franchise), travelled back in time to murder his younger self. The result of this time-travel suicide was the alternate timeline seen in Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun.
