Watch Lady and the Tramp on Disney+: Cast, date, plot, review
If you're looking for a heartwarming flick for the entire family, Lady and the Tramp will do.
Disney+ is here after launching in the U.S., Canada and the Netherlands. One of the most sought after titles upon release will be the new live action remake of the 1995 animated Disney classic Lady and the Tramp.
When is Lady and the Tramp coming out?
Lady and the Tramp will be available on Disney+ when the platform launches in Australia on 19 November.
What is Lady and the Tramp about?
A remake of the animated classic, Lady and the Tramp centres on the love story between two dogs. Lady is an upper-middle-class American cocker spaniel, while Tramp is a stray Schnauzer. After a particularly rough day, Lady joins Tramp in a series of romantic adventures, culminating in a candlelight dinner. But will these two doggos who come from entirely different worlds make it work?
Who stars in Lady and the Tramp?
In Disney's live-action remake, Tessa Thompson voices Lady, while Justin Theroux voices Tramp. Thompson has also appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, Annihilation, Sorry to Bother You, Men in Black: International and TV show Westworld. Meanwhile, Theroux is well-known for roles in HBO's The Leftovers, as well as movies like American Psycho, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, The Girl on the Train and The Spy Who Dumped Me.
The cast also includes Sam Elliott, Janelle Monáe, Ashley Jensen, Benedict Wong, Kiersey Clemons, Thomas Mann, Yvette Nicole Brown and Ken Jeong. If you were curious, the dog actors who portray Lady and Tramp are named Rose and Monte.
Lady and the Tramp review: Is it any good?
As long as you're looking for a fun movie that will please the entire family, there's a good chance you'll be satisfied with this remake. The story is timeless, the two dog actors adorable, and the entire cast is undoubtedly talented. However, Disney's live-action remakes have been hit or miss over the last few years, so we wouldn't set our expectations too high for this one.
Lady and the Tramp currently has a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which translates to mixed, but mostly positive reviews. A lot of critics called it cute and feel-good, while others declared themselves disappointed in the remake, saying it lacks the magic that made the animated original stand out.
That was also the problem with Disney's blockbuster The Lion King, which came out earlier this year and was criticised for lacking the excitement and heart of the original. Still, it went on to surpass Frozen and become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, so there were plenty of viewers who enjoyed it.
All in all, Lady and the Tramp probably won't change your life, but it will make for highly enjoyable viewing if you're a fan of family movies. We also refuse to believe that a love story between to dogs anything but beautiful.
You don't even have to leave the house and go to the theatre to tune in. Take advantage of the Disney+ free trial and stream it for free from the comfort of your living room. Then, check out some of the platform's other offerings, like Christmas film Noelle.
Disney+ details
The US, streaming service Disney+ didn't enjoy a seamless launch day, with users reporting multiple errors when trying to set up their accounts or watch content. While glitches are not uncommon when a new streaming platform hits the market, it's still frustrating. We hope they get resolved before Disney+ arrives in Australia on 19 November.
The Disney+ service will host titles from the Disney back catalogue, but also from Pixar, Lucasfilm, National Geographic, 20th Century Fox and Marvel. Don't expect all the content to be available at launch due to existing agreements between the Disney and Australian content providers.
Though that shouldn't be a deal breaker, as there will still be plenty to stream. More Disney animated classics like Lady and the Tramp will be available for those who have a taste for nostalgia. A subscription will cost $8.99/month or $89.99/year, but you can try it out with a one-week free trial.
