January’s Games With Gold jumps into the new year
Leap with Rayman Origins or thump your mates with Killer Instinct.
Every month, Microsoft switches up the free games it offers through its Games With Gold section of its Xbox Live Gold service. For January you can score two decent Xbox One titles and a couple of Xbox 360 classics.
On the Xbox One front, at the start of the month Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be able to grab World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap, a game described as a "tower-defense ARPG hybrid" title.
Later in the month on 16 January, Killer Instinct Season 2 Ultra Edition will go free if you’re an Xbox Live Gold subscriber. Killer Instinct as a title dates all the way back to when Rare worked with Nintendo, but this is the more modern re-imagining of the title.
Both games are solid additions to the Xbox Live Games With Gold library, but we’d argue that it’s on the Xbox 360 front that Games With Gold really shines in January.
On the Xbox 360 front, but also available via backwards compatibility, the first half of the month sees Double Fine’s quirky and somewhat under-appreciated The Cave made available.
Later in the month at the same time that Killer Insitnct Season 2 Ultra Edition becomes available, Ubisoft’s excellent Rayman Origins replaces The Cave. Rayman Origins was lauded for refining the 2D platformer to a razor-sharp edge with superb cartoon visuals and a strong and evolving gameplay system that has truly stood the test of time. If you haven’t yet played it and have an Xbox 360 or Xbox One, January is going to be a very good month for you indeed.
