About SBS On Demand

SBS, the Special Broadcasting Service, is an Australian public broadcasting network that was founded in 1978. SBS is one of Australia’s five main free-to-air TV networks and its purpose is “to provide multilingual and multicultural radio and television services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians and, in doing so, reflect Australia's multicultural society”.

SBS Online is the network’s online portal and plays host to SBS On Demand, a video streaming service. This service allows Australians to watch more of their favourite SBS programs anytime and without having to pay a fee. Users can browse through thousands of TV series, documentaries, movies, news and sport programs and watch them whenever they wish.

Want all the TV shows and movies? You can get a free trial with each of the streaming internet tv providers below:

SBS On Demand offers a free video streaming service to people all over Australia. Streaming provides a special technique for transferring multimedia data, allowing it to be sent in a steady uninterrupted stream. This means that users can watch videos from a provider in real time, as opposed to downloading a video file to their computer for later viewing.

SBS On Demand offers thousands of programs for viewing. Some of the programs available through SBS on Demand include:

  • Documentaries
  • Comedy series
  • Drama series
  • Cooking shows
  • News programs
  • Sports highlights
  • Movies

The best part about SBS On Demand’s video streaming service is that it is entirely free. There are no subscription costs and there is no need to fork out any money at all to utilise the service, plus you can use it whenever you want. There’s also no limit to how many times you can view a program, but keep in mind that shows and films will expire after they have been featured on the website for a certain period of time. Videos expire because SBS only has the rights from each production company to offer programs for a limited period.

To watch a video, all you have to do is click on it and it will start playing. You can search for a particular program, or browse through categories such as Programs, Film or News & Sport. You can view programs that have been recently added or that may be expiring soon, while you can also search for shows in your favourite genre, for example the arts or comedy.

While you don’t need to subscribe or become a member of SBS On Demand to use the video streaming service, you can sign up for an account using your Facebook, Twitter, Google or LinkedIn details. This allows you to create playlists, see programs that have been recommended for you and personalise your SBS On Demand experience. You can also subscribe to a whole series so that you never miss an episode of your favourite show.

I have read in several places that you do not have subscribe or be a member and can simply tap on a program and watch- why Am I asked to set up a login before I can get to watching a program?
I just want to watch not set up lists or anything, just simply watch!
Is this possible? And if so how?

      Hi JL,

      Thanks for your question.

You don’t have to sign-up to use SBS on Demand. Please note that there are a number of perks when you sign-up for an account with them such as adding videos to your playlist and subscribing to a particular series.

If you are using a computer, just go directly to their website and start watching the available programs. If you are using other devices, be sure that is compatible with SBS on Demand and that you have downloaded the app for the device.

How can I obtain SBS on Demand directly on my Sony Tv or via my Panasonic Blueray player

    • Staff
      Brodie | October 17, 2016

      Hi Maria,

Unfortunately, SBS On Demand doesn’t have an app for Sony TVs or Panasonic Blu-ray players. SBS On Demand’s website has a list of compatible devices here.

      Hello Alex,

      Thanks for your question,

You may be able to watch your favorite movies on your TV by connecting it thru a cable called HDMI. You may purchase this from any appliance and electronic shops. This cable will help you view your movies from your laptop thru your TV even browse the internet with a bigger screen.

      I hope this helps.

Is there an sbs app suitable for chrome cast and a macbook computer?

    • Staff
      Chester | September 9, 2016

      Hello Ted,

      Thanks for your question.

Yes there is, an SBS on demand app is currently available for iOS. Though please be reminded that the SBS On Demand app can only be downloaded from the Australian iTunes App store, and is not available to other countries. Furthermore, rights agreements mean that SBS On Demand is only available in Australia. Even if you are an Australian citizen, the service is unavailable abroad.

I hope I have answered your question.

      Hi Tom,

      Thanks for your question.

If you have a compatible LG TV (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015), you can watch SBS on Demand by first downloading the app through the link I’ve sent in your email.

      Hi Scout,

      Thanks for your question.

If you have a compatible Samsung Smart TV, you can download the SBS-on Demand app from the Smart Hub. Once you have installed the app and you have a high-speed broadband internet connection, you can readily access SBS on Demand contents.

Like other Australians living in remote areas I receive my internet through a satellite service (NBN). This provides very limited capacity during normal waking hours and more generous capacity between 1 am and 7am. The only practical way we could enjoy SBS on Demand would be to schedule and temporarily download an offering during the off peak hours and play it during a normal viewing time. For some reason SBS don’t seem to allow this so people like me miss out on a great resource.

We have purchased a TCL smart TV and cannot down load a compatible app from sbs on demand, are we overlooking or trying too hard and it is not available.

      Alex | August 15, 2016

      Hi Rob,

Unfortunately not every Smart TV model will have a compatible SBS On Demand app; in this case you may need to use an external box such as the Apple TV or Telstra TV to get your SBS fix.

I have a smart TV but everytime I Want to Use Your Service The Show Starts Ok But Stop Roughly Every 5 Minutes To Load. This Stop Us From Watching SBS on Demand. What Can We Do To Stop This From Happening
    Many Thanks

    • Staff
      Alex | August 15, 2016

      Hi Marc,

At a guess, if it’s stopping and starting then the issue is with the speed of the connection; it simply can’t download enough to keep the stream constant. There’s not too much you can do under these circumstances as it’s often more to with your overall connection, but it may be worth minimising any other online activity in your home so that the SBS On Demand connection can get as much bandwidth as feasible.

      Hi Mal,

SBS On Demand doesn’t appear to be compatible with TCL Smart TVs. Do you have Apple TV, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One?

Please can you advise. If I add a programme or series to my playlist can I watch those when I am abroad?
    Thank you

      Anndy | August 1, 2016

      Hi Rosemary,

      Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, even if you pre-added items on your playlist, rights agreements only allows SBS On Demand to be available in Australia. Even if you’re an Australian citizen, you cannot access their services if you are abroad.
