If you're an anime fan, you know that getting access to your favourite series used to be a struggle. But thanks to streaming services like Funimation, that's no longer the case. The platform hosts a wide variety of anime content, both dubbed and subtitled. It also features content simulcast straight from Japan, so you can watch new episodes as soon as they become available.
What is Funimation?
For over 25 years, Funimation has been an anime market leader, serving a passionate fan community. The company delivers anime content in multiple countries around the world across television, feature films, events, retail, merchandise and, of course, the Funimation subscription app.
Its online shop isn't available in Australia yet, but the streaming video service is. The online platform specialises in anime, with a focus on dubbed content. It delivers speedy dubbing and hosts an impressive collection of dubbed content for those who don't enjoy subtitles, though subtitled content is available on the service as well.
How much does Funimation cost?
Funimation allows you to watch a limited amount of content for free, with ads. However, if you want access to the entire library (including new, popular anime straight from Japan) and better features, you'll need to get the premium plan.
Called Premium Plus, the paid subscription plan costs $7.95 per month and offers users ad-free access to the entire Funimation library (subs and dubs), as well as offline viewing and the ability to watch on 5 devices at the same time. You can save by purchasing an annual subscription, which costs $79.50.
AnimeLab and Funimation Australian merger
If you're an anime enthusiast, you were probably familiar with AnimeLab, the Australian streaming service with a focus on anime content. As of 10 June 2021, AnimeLab officially became Funimation, which meant the local platform retired its brand and operates exclusively as Funimation moving forward.
Existing AnimeLab users can log in to Funimation with their AnimeLab credentials, but new ones will need to head straight to Funimation to create an account. You'll find the majority of content that was on AnimeLab on Funimation, including simulcasts. On the same note, Funimation and AnimeLab subscription plans were priced the same at the time the announcement was made.
What can I watch on Funimation?
The platform offers a generous library of content, including iconic series like Attack on Titan, Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fruits Basket and My Hero Academia.
Does Funimation have a free trial?
Yes. The service offers a 14-day free trial for its premium plan. You can browse and watch as much as you like for those 2 weeks to decide if you're interested in going premium for the long run.
One of the best things about Funimation is its clean, sleek interface. Navigating the library is a breeze and the service boasts a great search function.
The premium plan comes with up to 5 simultaneous streams, which means you can share your subscription with friends and family. Content is available in HD quality and Funimation offers solid device compatibility.
Each episode page lets you leave ratings and comments, follow a show or add it to your queue, as well as explore related material.
However, the best thing about Funimation is how quickly it delivers dubbed versions of new releases. Users can watch English-dubbed anime only 2 weeks after the original anime broadcast for selected series. You can check out the SimulDubs schedule on the Funimation website, no sign-in required.
