Which has lower fees?

InstaReM

InstaReM fees range from 0.25% to 1% depending on the currency and amount. For example, currencies such as the US dollar or British pound have a 0.5% fee. However, transferring to South Korea includes a 0.25% fee and transferring to Indian rupee includes a 0.6% fee.

WorldRemit

WorldRemit charges a fee, but the amount depends on how much you're sending, where you're sending it to and the type of transfer. The lowest fees are on bank transfers and sit around $3.99.

Winner: WorldRemit

While both providers' fees vary depending on currency and amount, often WorldRemit's $3.99 bank transfer fee beats InstaReM's percentage. It is completely dependant on where you're transferring money to, and how much, but when looking at popular currencies like the US dollar, often WorldRemit's fees are lower.

Let's crunch the numbers: Sending $1,000 and $10,000 to the UK

To help you compare, we'll look at two transactions side-by-side to see whether InstaReM or WorldRemit has lower costs. These are all the details that you should keep in mind when you're deciding on a provider.

Sending $1,000 to the UK
InstaReM WorldRemit
Transfer fee $5 $3.99
Exchange rate 1 AUD = 0.5351 GBP 1 AUD = 0.5277 GBP
Transfer speed 1-2 days 1 day
Total British pounds received GBP£532.42 GBP£525.61
Receiver gets GBP£6.81 more GBP£6.81 less
Sending $10,000 to the UK
InstaReM WorldRemit
Transfer fee $50 $3.99
Exchange rate 1 AUD = 0.535 GBP 1 AUD = 0.528 GBP
Transfer speed 1-2 days 1 day
Total British pounds received GBP£5,322.26 GBP£5275.09
Receiver gets GBP£47.17 more GBP£47.17 less

Transferring with InstaReM will put more money in the receiver's pocket, both on small transfers and large transfers. While InstaReM's fee may seem higher, the exchange rate they offer is much better, saving you money overall.

Which offers better exchange rates?

InstaRem

InstaReM is one of the few providers that converts at the mid-market rate, meaning there won't be a margin on top of the exchange rate.

WorldRemit

In addition to fees, WorldRemit adds a margin to the mid-market exchange rate. This margin changes depending on the currency, but generally sits in the 0.7% to 3% range.

For example, if you want to send money to the United States:

  • Mid-market exchange rate: 1 AUD = 0.708 USD
  • WorldRemit's exchange rate: 1 AUD = 0.703 USD

Making it a margin of 0.7%.

You can't beat the mid-market rate.

Which is faster?

InstaRem

After your first transaction, which will take a little longer as you go through the verification process, most transfers with InstaReM take between one and two business days depending on the currency and banks involved.

WorldRemit

The WorldRemit transfer time changes depending on the payment method and country receiving the money. Here are some estimates based on payment method:

  • Bank transfer: Instant transfers to selected banks, but a processing time of one to three business days for other transactions.
  • Cash pick-up: Available to collect instantly.
