ETH2X-FLI, or the Ethereum 2x Flexible Leverage Index, is a tokenised index product offered by the decentralised finance (DeFi) protocol, Index Coop. Marketed as the “BlackRock of crypto” Index Coop is a platform that offers a collection of crypto and DeFi-based index products, with the aim to make investing in cryptocurrencies and DeFi accessible to all investors. The community behind the project is composed of finance professionals, engineers, DeFi experts, and crypto-enthusiasts.
According to the official whitepaper, the project wants to expand the use of index products beyond active DeFi users and become the dominant market leader in the sector. To ensure trust with users, all protocol decisions are voted on by those that hold the native cryptocurrency token, INDEX. INDEX token holders ensure that the protocol remains decentralised and decide on what index products are allowed onto the platform. DPI is the protocol’s most popular index, which is composed of a collection of DeFi-based cryptocurrencies. The holder of the associated DPI token gains exposure to all DeFi-based tokens held within the basket. In addition to DPI, the protocol offers a further 10 products. One of these products is the ETH 2x Flexible Leverage Index. By depositing ETH into the protocol, the fund allows users to gain increased leveraged exposure to the asset. The product achieves 2x leverage on Ethereum by using the DeFi application, Compound. The project deposits ETH into Compound and then borrows USDC against the ETH deposited. The protocol then sells the USDC for more ETH. This provides 2x leverage on the original ETH cryptocurrency. Holders of ETH2x-FLI can enjoy the 2x leverage without needing to worry about managing the debt involved, which includes paying down the interest and monitoring the liquidity of the position. This is all monitored by Index Coop. If ETH increases by 10%, the index should increase by 20%. Likewise, if ETH decreases by 10%, the index will decrease by 20%. For maintaining the position Index Coop charges a 1.95% annual fee.
