IKEA bringing smart lighting to Australia in 2018

IKEA smart lighting system

Remotely access and automate your home lighting system.

Australians visit IKEA for affordable, ready-to-assemble furniture, homewares and appliances but from next year, they'll also be able purchase smart lighting globes and panels, controllable via app or remote.

The new smart lighting collection will allow users to remotely control, automate and adjust their home lighting and will feature globes and light panels that can dim and switch between warm and cool light, using either a controller or the TRÅDFRI app for phones and tablets.

The products, available in Australia from early 2018, will be a plug and play solution, meaning no hardwiring is required. You'll simply need to replace your regular globes with new, smart TRÅDFRI globes.

IKEA's plan is to create a fully automated system which connects technology and our homes.

"IKEA smart lighting was designed to enable people to have better lighting at home, in an easy and affordable way. For example, it can be set up to create a different type of light for early mornings, another setting for late nights or for working or cooking," IKEA Home Furnishing expert Helen Longford said.

"We also know that being able to dim and adjust lighting is one of the things that people look for and appreciate at home, and being able to do this remotely makes the collection really exciting."

Australian prices for these globes, panels and remotes have not been released but a TRÅDFRI smart kit, available in the United States, containing a gateway hub, remote and two LED bulbs costs $US79.99.

Last year IKEA released its Australia People & Planet Positive Report, emphasising its commitment to sustainability and identifying ways in which Aussies can save energy, money and the environment.

IKEA Home Smart and the new smart lighting collection is an obvious continuation of this ethos.
