HTC’s new Vive Cosmos Elite VR headset is available for preorder now
Headsets will ship from 18 March.
Update: Our HTC Vive Cosmos and Comos Elite review is now live.
HTC has introduced a new series of Vive Cosmos headsets, including the Vive Cosmos Elite, a premium headset aimed at virtual reality and gaming enthusiasts.
The Elite features the same flip-up design as previous Vive headsets with a modular tracking faceplate but, it also comes with additional SteamVR tracking base stations. These base stations need to be mounted or installed in the room you're using the Elite in. They increase the tracking coverage of your headset to an area of up to 3.5m by 3.5m and improve the speed and accuracy of the Elite.
Priced at $1,699, the Elite bundle includes the headset with the external tracking faceplate, 2 SteamVR tracking base stations, 2 wand controllers and a code for a free 6-month membership of Viveport Infinity.
If the Elite is out of your price range, or you're just dipping your toes into the world of VR, HTC also offers a few more affordable options.
HTC's midrange headset, the Vive Cosmos launched a few months ago. It's priced at $1,299 and features a faceplate with 6 cameras, 2 controllers and a 6-month Viveport Infinity membership.
If you're looking for an entry-level headset, the Vive Cosmos Play includes the Vive headset, a faceplate with four cameras, and two Vive controllers. Unlike the rest of the Vive Cosmos line, the Play doesn't include integrated audio, so you'll have to wear your own headphones. Pricing for the Vive Cosmos Play hasn't yet been announced.
If you're not sure which option is best for you, or don't want to splurge on the Elite now but want the option to upgrade later, the good news is that you can expand your Vive collection at any time by purchasing new faceplates. For example, you can get the external tracking faceplate that comes with the Elite on its own for $349 to upgrade your Vive Cosmos Play.
The Vive Cosmos Elite bundle and Vive Cosmos are available now through the Vive website.
