What policies are available from HSBC Travel Insurance?

HSBC offers four travel insurance policies underwritten by Allianz Australia. You can choose between the following:


This plan offers the most cover for your international journey and is available to all Australian residents irrespective of age. However, an additional premium may be levied to cover pre-existing medical conditions for travellers aged 75 and over. You are covered for:

  • Unlimited overseas medical assistance and hospitalisation expenses
  • Accidental death and disability
  • Hospital cash allowance
  • Loss of income
  • Theft of cash
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits
  • Travel delays and alternative transport costs
  • Luggage, personal effects and travel documents
  • Car hire excess
  • Personal liability up to $5 million


This no-frills policy provides the essential cover you’d need during an emergency while on holiday, including:

  • Unlimited cover for medical assistance and hospitalisation
  • Dental expenses
  • Personal liability up to $5 million

Frequent Traveller

This policy covers an unlimited number of trips during a 12-month period. Any one journey can be a maximum of 37 days for leisure travel or 90 days for business travel. The Frequent Traveller plan provides the following cover:

  • Unlimited overseas medical assistance and hospitalisation expenses
  • Accidental death and disability
  • Hospital cash allowance
  • Loss of income
  • Theft of cash
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits (you have to set the limit)
  • Travel delays and alternative transport costs
  • Luggage, personal effects and travel documents
  • Car hire excess
  • Personal liability up to $5 million


Perfectly suited to travel within Australia, this plan doesn’t provide medical or hospital cover. All medical claims should be addressed to your private health insurance provider should you require medical assistance or hospitalisation. You are covered for the following:

  • Accidental death
  • Additional expenses
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits
  • Travel delays
  • Luggage and personal effects
  • Car hire excess
  • Personal liability up to $5 million

How do I apply for HSBC Travel Insurance travel insurance?

  1. Compare the policies. Depending on your destination and how much cover you’d like for your journey, you have the choice of four policies for local and international journeys.
  2. Online quotes. You can get an online quote on HSBC website by entering your personal and travel details.
  3. Read the PDS. Everything you need to know about the policies is laid out in the policy disclosure statement, so make sure that the terms of the contract meet your insurance expectations.
  4. Additional options. If you require extra cover for special luggage or certain pre-existing medical conditions, make sure that your chosen policy can be upgraded to suit your needs.

How do I make a claim with HSBC Travel Insurance?

  • Have your information handy. When you get in touch, make sure you have your policy number with you. You should also provide information about the incident as well as details about the loss or damaged you suffered.
  • Be cooperative. Supply all the necessary information so that your claim is handled quickly and efficiently. Besides the claims form, you will also be asked to submit medical and police reports, proof of ownership, itineraries and luggage tags.
  • Respect the process. Let Allianz handle the details of your claim. Refrain from offering to pay damages or any financial reparation without consulting Allianz first.

  • Question: How is my premium calculated?
    Answer: Your premium depends on your destination, the length of the journey and the amount of risk you represent to the insurer. The higher the risk, the higher the premium.
  • Question: When would I qualify for the loss of income benefit?
    Answer: If you are injured and unable to work for 30 days after your return to Australia, you are eligible for a weekly loss of income benefit.
  • Question: I missed my best friend’s wedding because of travel delays. Can I claim?
    Answer: If travel delays cause you to miss a special event such as a wedding, funeral, sporting event or pre-paid travel, you can claim under the section alternative travel expenses.
  • Question: Can I apply for cover with pre-existing conditions?
    Answer: You can but the onus is on you to make sure that your illness or condition is covered by the terms of the contract. If not, you can apply for additional cover.
  • Question: Who can apply for HSBC Travel Insurance?
    Answer: You can apply if you are an Australian resident, you purchase the policy before leaving on your trip and if your trip begins and ends in Australia.
  • Question: Can I cancel my HSBC Travel insurance policy if I’m not happy with it?
    You can cancel your policy for a full refund during the cooling-off period of 14 days following the issue of your Certificate of Insurance. Provided you haven’t left on your trip or filed to claim from your policy, you will receive a full refund.
  • Question: Who underwrites HSBC Travel Insurance?
    Answer: HSBC Travel Insurance is underwritten by Allianz Australia Insurance Limited. If you help in a medical emergency, you will be assisted by Allianz Global Assistance.
