How do we pick the best NBN plans?

Here's how we choose the best NBN plans in Australia each month across 5 different categories.

We’re reader-supported and may be paid when you visit links to partner sites. We don’t compare all products in the market, but we’re working on it!

Our top picks are a selection of the best NBN plans available in Australia, based on our extensive research and market experience.

We compare all major NBN providers in Australia, though some smaller companies that operate in specific regions or states may not be covered.

These picks are updated at the start of each month to incorporate any changes in pricing, discounts, speed and other plan features.

Our choice of the best NBN plans are displayed at the top of our pages to help you make quick and easy decisions.

However, keep in mind that they may not necessarily be the best options for you. Be sure to consider your own personal preferences, needs and circumstances before making a decision.

What features do we compare?

  • Price. This is the monthly cost of the Internet plan. We also considered promotional plan discounts if they last for 3 or more months to ensure longer term value.
  • Typical evening speed. Measured in megabytes per second (Mbps), this is the speed you should expect during the busiest hours of the day when most people are online (7pm–11pm). Typical evening speed varies depending on which NBN speed tier your plan is on.
  • Data limit. NBN plans can come with either data caps or unlimited data each month. While data caps benefit those who don't use their Internet connection regularly, we prioritise plans with unlimited data as it ensures you have enough data for the month.
  • Exclusive offers. These are promotional discounts available through Finder only when you click the green "Go to site" button. You won't find these offers available on the provider's own website.
  • Extra plan features. We take a look at extra perks and plan features that NBN providers offer apart from a basic Internet package. These can include free entertainment add-ons such as Optus Sport or BINGE, exceptional customer service, home phone lines and call packages, plus access to any special rewards programs.
  • Set-up fees. These are any extra fees you may need to pay when you sign up to a new Internet plan to get your service up and running.
  • Performance in ACCC reports. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) analyses the performance of 11 NBN providers each quarter to assess if they're delivering on their advertised speeds. You'll find the most recent version of the report here.

How do we decide the top pick for each category?
