What can I sell on Finder Marketplace?

Finder Marketplace is a budding online marketplace that has the potential to sell thousands of products to eager shoppers. There are currently four main categories that you can list your items under:

  • Health and beauty. Think boutique eye creams, organic shampoos and teeth whitening treatments. This is where you'll list products that are good for you inside and out.
  • Food and groceries. Homemade muesli and fair trade coffee sit side by side in this category.
  • Home and garden. Furniture, home decor, garden decor and kitchen items are just some examples of what you could list in this category.
  • Office. You can list office furniture, accessories and supplies here.

How much does it cost to use Finder Marketplace?

There are four plans that you can choose from, depending on how many products you plan to sell. All plans include a vendor microstore as well as fraud protection for sellers and buyers.

The Beta Tester Plan is available for the first 30 approved vendors that upload 30 products within 30 days. If eligible, the special plan pricing and inclusions will be valid for 12 months from the date of account approval.

  • 1.75% + $0.30 for domestic cards
  • 2.90% + $0.30 for international cards
  • An additional $0.08 per transaction for fraud scanning and protection

Let's crunch the numbers

To help clarify what you could end up paying in fees, let's look at an example. Say you're selling designer socks online for $30 a pair with free shipping and you're currently on the free Finder Starter plan. Someone from Brisbane has just bought a pair of your socks. Here's a breakdown of the fees you would pay:

  • Transaction fee: 1.75% ($0.53) + $0.30 for a domestic card = $0.83
  • Fraud scanning and protection fee: $0.08

In total, this is $0.91 in fees. From the $30 pair of socks, you'll end up with $29.09 at the end – which means Finder Marketplace is getting 0.03% of the total in fees.

Is selling on Finder Marketplace worth it?

Whether you're keen to earn some extra cash or you're looking to generate huge revenues, selling items on Finder Marketplace can be just what you're looking for. It's important to keep in mind, however, that just like any other business venture out there, there are cons that go along with the pros and there's no guarantee of success.

One of the biggest hurdles for new sellers will be managing any fees and ensuring there's a big enough margin so that you still end up making a profit. Fortunately, Finder Marketplace has a free Starter plan so you can experiment until you get the pricing just right.

Another possible risk is losing out on brand recognition. If you want to make a big name for yourself or your products, then selling through a marketplace can sometimes give you the opposite effect. Customers will see your products but not necessarily get to know your brand. Make sure you use the options for branded images, logos and description fields to put your brand out there.

How to start selling on Finder Marketplace

Getting started is relatively easy. You can create a Seller account in just a few steps:

How to price your items

There are a few considerations to take into account when selecting the price for your items:

  • Work out your costs. Besides what a product costs you, you also need to factor in your overheads to figure out your break-even amount. This could include branding, shipping, packaging, storage and employee wages.
  • Decide on a profit margin. Some sellers use complicated formulas to work out the ideal amount, while others stick to a percentage (e.g. 20% of the product cost). The profit margin essentially needs to be an amount above the base cost that you're willing to earn to make selling the product worthwhile.
  • Do your market research. You can only price an item as high as a customer is willing to pay, so it's a good idea to check what other sellers are charging for similar products.
  • Continue to evaluate. Customers, costs and competitors can and do change, so make sure to keep an eye on what's going on to make sure your price remains optimal.

What types of payment does Finder Marketplace accept?

Finder Marketplace accepts credit cards only and uses Stripe to process all payments.

Sellers will create a Stripe Connect Express account as part of the application process so that funds can be transferred to your Express balance for you to withdraw. Head over to Stripe's website for more information on Stripe and Stripe Connect Express.

How to ship items on Finder Marketplace

Deliveries are the responsibility of the seller. Once notified of a successful order, you'll be expected to ship your product within three days by a method likely to reach the customer within a further seven days.

The expected timeframe can be modified with separate specifications detailed on the website. More information can be found in the Merchant Agreement.

How can I market my Finder Marketplace products?

The best way to position your products on Finder Marketplace is to consider your images and their descriptions. The better your photos and the clearer your descriptions, the higher your chances are of standing out and being noticed.

Professionally shot stock photos from manufacturers are ideal, but consider whether other sellers are using the same images. In this instance, try your best to make your images unique. You can try an overlay with your key selling point over the image. This could be: "Ships within 24 hours", "Extended warranty" or "Australian made".

For your description, start with a paragraph followed by a few bullet points highlighting at least three features and benefits of your product.

This is also your opportunity to tell buyers your point of difference. Are your products locally sourced? Are they sustainably manufactured? Do you offer express shipping? Think about why customers should buy from you instead of your competitors.

What to watch out for when selling with Finder Marketplace

Like with any online marketplace, there are some potential drawbacks and limitations. Here are some points to consider:

  • It's relatively new. Finder Marketplace is quite new compared to other marketplaces. However, this could be a good opportunity to grow along with it and discover the best way to market your products.
  • Credit card only. Some customers may not feel comfortable paying with a credit card.
  • Limited customisation options. Some sellers may like the choice of being able to customise the design of their vendor microstore.
