What is MovieBloc?

MovieBloc is a platform that aims to decentralise the film industry. The platform runs on the Ontology blockchain and has been designed for all film distribution participants including content creators, consumers, translators, designers, curators and reviewers. The project was launched in 2019 from South Korea with the intention of creating a transparent revenue stream and equal opportunity for content creators. According to MovieBloc’s whitepaper, content creators are guaranteed up to 90% of the revenue they generate. The platform currently holds a partnership with KMPlayer, a video playback software with 20 million active monthly users. There are three key elements that compose MovieBloc. These include Bloc, Market, and Fundraising. Bloc acts as the decentralised layer for communicating with participants. Market is where content can be exchanged and traded, and Fundraising is the layer that provides incentives to participants. MBL is the native cryptocurrency of the MovieBloc platform. The primary use case of the MBL token is to pay for services. A user must also hold a certain amount of MBL in a wallet to secure voting rights at PICK, which is an event that allows users to vote for the curation of high quality movies.

What to consider when buying MovieBloc

MBL tokens are first and foremost utility tokens used to pay for economic activity on the MovieBloc platform. Before buying MBL tokens it is important to evaluate the tokenomics and potential upside of the associated MovieBloc platform:
  • Utility. Users can use MBL to watch premium content, which is subsequently transferred to creators and curators through a smart contract. Creators can then use MBL to pay for translators and designers if required. Alternatively, users can make donations to any MovieBloc participant they think has produced remarkable content. The token is also used to reward users for rating films and reporting illegal content.
  • Supply and tokenomics. The maximum supply of MBL tokens is capped at 30 billion. An initial private sale took place in Apr 2019 for 3% of all tokens. A secondary public sale saw the release of a further 8%. Over 40% have been allocated to the MovieBloc ecosystem, with the remainder divided between the MovieBloc Foundation, the development team, the Ontology Foundation and future airdrops.
  • Voting rights. MBL tokens give users the eligibility to vote in the “PICK” event where a list of movies is curated. While general users can earn votes by watching paid movies, MBL token holders get one vote per 20,000 MBL tokens held. The tokens need to be staked during the PICK which takes place over a 72 hour period.
  • Growth strategy. MovieBloc aims to increase its usage by hosting online film festivals to identify quality movies and new creators. It also plans to serve as a platform where creators can reach bigger audiences by accessing foreign subtitles.
