Honolulu insider flight tips

National carrier, Hawaiian Airlines, is known for its generous check-in baggage allowance. Travellers from Australia can check in two items weighing up to 64 kilograms in total and surfers can also check in a surfboard as part of this allowance. Hawaiian Airlines flies from 11 Australia airports, including direct flights from Sydney and Brisbane.

If you don't need to take that much with you, Jetstar offers cheap flights with seat-only fares (including seven kilos of carry-on luggage). Jetstar flies between Honolulu and nine Australian cities via Sydney or Melbourne. You can check in baggage and add on in-flight meals and/or entertainment for an extra fee.

Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air and Mokulele Airlines offer inter-island flights which take only 30-60 minutes. The aircraft used by Island Air fly at lower altitudes so you can enjoy a bird's-eye view of the scenery. There are direct flights from Honolulu to all of the neighbouring islands but not between all of them. Plan in advance which islands you want to visit and schedule accordingly so you don't lose too much time in transit.

If you plan to visit the Big Island from Honolulu then it's a good idea to fly into one side of the island and out of the other so that you can travel across and explore. Kona International (KOA) is on the west coast and Hilo (ITO) is on the east.

How to get around Honolulu from the airport

Honolulu International (HNL) is the main gateway to Hawaii and it’s only 10 minutes to downtown Honolulu and another 10 minutes to Waikiki. If you like the convenience of having someone meet you at the airport, see if your hotel offers airport transfers. Taxis are generally a pricey option but they are readily available and dispatchers are on hand to call them for you. TheBus is Oahu’s public bus operator with cheap fares all around the island, which you can pay for individually or with a multi-day pass. You are only allowed one item of hold luggage per passenger though.

There are also several private airport shuttle services from Honolulu Airport to downtown or to Waikiki. They have a more generous luggage allowance than public buses and don’t require reservations. Just look for a shuttle attendant and let them know where you are going. Major car rental companies have counters inside the baggage claim area or there are shuttles outside to off-site car rental providers.
