HBF is one of the largest not-for-profit health funds in Australia, and offers a range of home insurance options. It’s great to have a choice, but how do you work out the right cover for your needs? Are you looking for contents or building insurance, or both? Do you want basic or comprehensive cover? What’s the difference and what do they include and exclude? What cover options does HBF offer for home insurance?

  • Contents Insurance. HBF Contents Insurance covers household goods or personal belongings that are not fitted or fixed to your building, offering protection whether you’re at home or away.
  • Building Insurance. This type of cover safeguards your home, including fittings and fixtures. It also applies to any structural improvements, including fences, gates, garages, carports and sheds as well as built-in swimming pools, spas and anything permanently built or installed on your property for domestic purposes.
  • Building and Contents Insurance. If you want extensive cover for your home, household goods and personal belongings against events like flood, fire, earthquake, theft, burglary and storm damage, this level of insurance offers the best security.

You can purchase each policy at any of the following levels:

  • Basic cover: Generally offers the bare bones of cover for a lower premium.
  • Quality cover: Provides additional protection against listed events such as electrical motor burnouts.
  • Premium cover: The comprehensive option for each policy, with the highest level of protection.

What additional cover options are available?

  • Special Valuables insurance (contents). Covers loss for any nominated item against accidental loss or damage anywhere in the world. Unlike Accidental Damage, Special Valuables insurance covers the full amount of items such as jewellery and watches, stamp, cash or medal collections, electrical devices and sporting equipment.
  • Accidental Damage insurance (building). This premium cover for your home and contents, protects you against any accidental damage or loss from unintentional or unforeseen events, such as theft, fire, explosion, landslide, storm or flooding. It also covers any accidental breakage of items such as windows, glass, mirrors and sinks.

What exclusions are there?

When choosing your insurance policy, keep in mind that the following exclusions will apply to damage or loss from:

  • Earth movements
  • Erosion, rust, deterioration, depreciation and wear and tear
  • Vermin, rodents and insects
  • Roots from trees, plants, shrubs or grass
  • Any process of cleaning with the use of chemicals
  • Defective items or faulty workmanship or design
  • Intentional or malicious damage or theft by a tenant
  • Water damage (other than flood)
  • Damage or repairs that occurred outside of your policy period
  • Lawful destruction or confiscation of your property
  • Deliberate or intentional damage or theft authorised by you

What excess do I need to pay?

Excess is the amount you are required to pay yourself if you make a claim. Your excess will depend on both the policy you selected and the level of cover, as well as the type of damage or loss you have sustained. For example, if your home was burgled and vandalised, you need to make claims for both theft and vandalism, and pay the required excess for each.

How do I make a claim?

If you need to make a claim on your policy, you can call HBF on 1300 559 867 at any time of the day or night.

While lodging a claim, HBF can also assist in organising any repairs you may be eligible for through your policy.
