Where should I book a holiday house in Margaret River?
- For wineries: Wineries are dotted throughout the Margaret River region but to place yourself in the centre of it all, stay in or near Margaret River itself. It's often the starting point for wine tours because it's always better when someone else is driving, no?
- For the beach: Gnarabup is on the western edge of the Margaret River region and is the place to be for sand and tranquillity. Alternatively you can stay further north near Kilcarnup Beach where there are more wineries as well. However, you won't be able to stay on the beach itself as it is part of Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.
- For families: No surprise here, Margaret River city centre is where families can make the most of their stay. The township is bustling with artisan stores and galleries. Many tours depart from here as well. Families wishing to make a bigger trip of it can also spend a few days in Busselton which offers marine adventures for kiddies, including the famous Busselton Underwater Observatory.
- For fishing: Throwing a line is a popular recreational activity in the region and there are numerous spots where you can catch your own meal. These include Sugarloaf Rock, Yallingup, Smiths Beach, Canal Rocks and Wyadup Rocks.
Where to stay in Margaret River for cheap holiday homes
Rental prices in Margaret River are fairly standard no matter where you stay, though sticking to the south of the city can shave off a few dollars.
However, the main element that makes a place cheaper is how large it is. Generally, homesteads can set you back from $120 per night.
To get that down to double digits, look for guest suites instead. This means you'll be sharing the space either with your host or another guest; however, typically you'll have a bathroom to yourself.
If you have your heart set on a private space, look for apartments which are often cheaper to stay in than houses.

Where to stay in Margaret River for luxury holiday houses
There are some stunning villas and homesteads west of the main Margaret River town. Sounds ironic, but the price shoots up as they sit on larger patches of land and are therefore more spacious.
For something ultimately exceptional, nudge yourself just out of the Margaret River region to the west coast. Around Prevelly is where you'll discover immense properties overlooking the water with infinity pools that'll have you swooning.

Where to stay in Margaret River for pet-friendly accommodation
From its beaches to its wineries, there are stacks of pet-friendly places you can bring your pooch to when in Margaret River. Some dog-friendly wineries to get you started are Cape Naturaliste Vineyard, Tassell Park Wines, Howling Woods Wines and Hay Shed Hill.
Along the coast you'll discover parks and beaches where your furry friend can run wild. This includes Yallingup Beach, Smiths Beach, Beachlands in Busselton, Bunker Bay, Gnarabup Beach and Prevelly Beach.
Suffice to say, multiple homestays accept pets. When searching for your house, filter it to include "pets allowed" to bring them all up. You might also like to keep an eye out for the size of properties if your pup loves to run, and any fencing to keep them safe.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to bring to a holiday home in Margaret River?
Being a relaxing holiday, you don't need to pack anything too special with you. However, we do recommend that you at least add one pair of closed shoes for walking around farms and vineyards as some have strict policies regarding this. Also, having a brush to clean your shoes, particularly if you are staying on a farm, is also a good idea. If you're with a loved one, you may also like to pack a nice dress/suit for a romantic dinner. If you're planning to venture out to the beach or Busselton and its jetty, a beach towel may also be in order as homestays often don't supply these.
What should I consider when I'm staying in a holiday home in Margaret River?
If there's one reason you visit Margaret River, it's the produce. You may be bringing home a bit of it – from wine to artisan food. It's therefore a good idea to pack some layers of bubble wrap and a cooler bag to avoid breaking or spoiling them on the journey home.
How do I get to my holiday home?
The most popular way into Margaret River is to fly into Perth then take the drive down to Margaret River. This is 3 hours each way. Another option that has recently launched is to fly direct to Margaret River. However this is a very limited option offered only by Jetstar. It gets you to Busselton Airport which is only a 45-minute ride to Margaret River. As both require you to drive, it's recommended you pre-book your car rental early.
