Hervey Bay is about 300km from Brisbane, or $119 from Sydney, as part of Virgin Australia's latest #MatesRates sale. Travel in groups of 2 to 8, and all of you can pick up flights there and back from as little as $238 each.

It's a reasonable price for most full-service domestic flights around Australia, but is especially good for smaller spots like Hervey Bay. You can't get budget flights in, so Virgin Australia and Qantas are your only options, and the latter will set you back around $165 to $225 each way during the same travel period. You'll definitely be saving a good chunk of change by flying on MatesRates.

And if you haven't been before, you're in for a real treat. Hervey Bay might be best known as the gateway to Fraser Island just a short ferry ride away. That's not entirely fair to the Bay itself though, which enjoys a reputation as one of Australia's best whale watching spots. During peak periods many operators here will even offer guaranteed sightings. You'll get the best whale watching with the early October flights, but all of the flights are during summer.

Temperatures usually hover around 30°C during these travel periods, but you'll most likely get some even hotter ones. Odds are you'll find yourself racing across hot sand to the water at least once this trip.

Depending on the route blackout periods may apply, and space might be limited during peak periods. Flights from Sydney start at $119, but you can also depart Melbourne from $199 or $219.

Flights can be booked direct through Virgin Australia and are available until 11:59pm AEST on Sunday, 30 July 2017.
