Hertz and Dollar are both well-known car hire companies. Hertz has options for every budget, while Dollar offers budget rentals for the money-smart traveller – but it’s not as clear-cut as it seems.

We’ve compared both companies to help you make an informed decision and drive away in your ideal hire car.

Who offers the best price?

Hertz and Dollar both price match. If you find a better price outside of their websites, both companies will give you an additional 10% discount on that rate. Whichever company you choose, you know you’ll get the best rate.

Hertz and Dollar both offer manual and automatic vehicles.

Do the seats have covers?

Neither company specifies whether the seats have covers.

Do cars have trackers?

Some Hertz vehicles are fitted with in-vehicle monitoring systems which track the vehicle’s location, speed and distance for the duration of the rental period.

Dollar does not specify whether its vehicles have trackers or any policy in this regard.

Is there a points/loyalty programme?

Hertz has Gold Plus Rewards, which offers one point for every US dollar or equivalent spent at participating Hertz locations.

Dollar has a loyalty programme called Dollar Express Renter Rewards. Like Hertz, you will earn one point for every US dollar or equivalent spent at Dollar. Points can be redeemed for free rental days.

Is GPS included?

GPS systems are optional extras for Hertz and Dollar rentals.

Can I return the car early?

Hertz allows early returns, but you may have to pay an early return fee.

Dollar also allows early returns, with a fee for returning the car more than 24 hours early.

Can I get a discount?

Apart from special deals, offers and vouchers, Hertz does not give discounts. However, Gold Plus Rewards members can redeem points for free rental days, weekends or weeks.

If you have a promotional code for Dollar, you can use it to receive a discount. Corporate car rental discounts are also available. Dollar Express members can redeem points for free rental days.

What are the deals like?

Hertz deals cover discounts off the overall rental price, free days and discounts for certain vehicles. Current deals include one free day at the base rate when you book five days’ rental in South Queensland, 20% off the base rate when you book seven or more days’ rental, three days for the price of two on weekend rentals and 15% off the base rate on Prestige Collection rentals.

Dollar offers discounts off the overall price for certain time frames and for prepaid rentals. Dollar’s current deals are a 10% discount on weekend or weekly car rentals, $40 off monthly car rental and 20% off prepaid rentals. They also offer partner discounts with companies including AAdvantage, Avianca, Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

The verdict?

Dollar’s rental prices were slightly cheaper, but Hertz has more vehicles, more locations, clearer policies and more payment options. All in all, you’ll find Hertz easier to deal with when reserving a vehicle, for just a marginally higher price than Dollar.
