Do they have manual and/or auto cars?

Yes. Both companies offer manual and automatic cars.

Do the seats have covers?

Hertz and Alamo do not specify whether their vehicles have seat covers.

Do the cars have trackers?

Some Hertz vehicles have In Vehicle Monitoring Systems to track the vehicle’s location, speed and distance for the duration of the rental period.

Alamo does not specify whether its vehicles are fitted with tracking systems or not. Enquire at your rental office for more information.

Is there a points/loyalty programme?

Hertz runs an in-house loyalty programme called Gold Plus Rewards, with 1 point earned for every US dollar or equivalent spent at participating Hertz locations.

Alamo runs Alamo Insiders club. Members receive 5% off rental rates and exclusive deals.

Is GPS is included?

GPS is available as an optional extra with Hertz and Alamo rentals.

Can I return the car early?

Early returns are allowed by Hertz, but in most cases an early return fee is applicable.

Alamo does not specify a policy on early returns on its website; contact your rental office for more information.

Can I get a discount?

The only deals offered by Hertz are special deals, offers and vouchers. Gold Plus Rewards members can redeem points for free rental days, weekends or weeks.

At Alamo, discounts are only available through vouchers, coupons and special offers. You can also earn rewards and frequent flier miles in select locations. Alamo Insiders members receive 5% off rental rates.

What deals are there?

Hertz deals we’ve seen include discounted hire and bonus days on your hire. Some popular deals include one free day off the base rate when you book five days’ rental, 20% off the base rate when you book seven or more days’ rental, three days for the price of two on weekend rentals and more.

Alamo offers deals on particular locations and vehicles, rate discounts and vehicle upgrades. Their website is tailored toward customers in the US and Alamo Insider members, but if you’re looking for location-specific deals, you can use their search engine to find what you’re looking for. Current offers include 20% off low-season rentals in Latin America, free vehicle upgrades, 10% off rentals in Latin America and the Caribbean and partnerships with AAdvantage, Virgin Flying Club, Hilton Honors, Best Western and more.

The verdict?

Hertz offers a greater range of deals both in Australia and overseas. The deals section of their website is also much more intuitive.
