Hertz Excess and Excess Reduction
Accident Excess is the amount you may be liable to pay in the event of an accident. Usually you can reduce this amount, called Accident Excess Reduction (AER, by paying slightly more for the hourly, daily, or monthly rental fee. MAX or AER does not apply to accessories. Your excess amount is noted and accepted by you on the rental form, as part of the agreement between you and Hertz.
How do I pick up my rental from Hertz?
When you make a reservation with Hertz, you will first be invited to select a pick-up location. In Australia, Hertz offices are located in every capital city, airport and major town, and in every state and territory.
To pick up a car, you will need ID, your driver’s licence and a credit card. Hertz can also deliver vehicles if arrangements are made more than 24 hours prior to the pick-up time, or you can arrange to be picked up and driven to the closest Hertz centre to collect your car. Pick-up is only available within 15 minutes drive from the Hertz centre you have selected.
What forms of payment does Hertz accept?
What do I need to know about Hertz?
Does Hertz offer a pick-up service?
Hertz offers a free pick-up and drop-off service at select non-airport locations in the US. Unfortunately the service isn't available in Australia. If you're booking for pick-up in the US, when you're booking your hire car, look out for the letters HLE listed for the location. This means you'll be able to arrange a pick-up and drop-off with that location.
Does Hertz have unlimited miles/kilometres?
At most urban locations in Australia, Hertz rentals don't limit the number of kilometres per day or per rental. If you're picking up a car in a more remote area, you may be limited to 100 free kilometres per day.
How do I cancel or modify my reservation with Hertz?
To view cancel or modify a reservation just click on the reservation tab on the main menu and click ‘View/ Cancel/ Modify Reservation’. Enter your confirmation number and your surname and hit continue to display your booking.
What happens if there's damage to the car?
If you get into an accident or your rental vehicle is stolen or damaged in use, you will have to pay an excess charge. This charge can be upwards of $6,000, depending on the car and the rental company.
What options do I have to remove or reduce rental excess?
You can remove or reduce your excess completely with the following options:
1. Pay for an excess waiver with the car rental company
The cost of this will vary depending on the destination you're in and it's usually charged at a daily rate. Some rental companies may only let you reduce a part of your excess charge.
2. Buy car rental excess insurance
Companies like Tripcover.com.au and Rentalcover.com offer insurance that purely covers you for car rental excess charges. You can learn more about car rental excess insurance here.
3. Buy travel insurance with car rental excess cover
Travel insurance policies typically include car rental excess cover automatically and with cover up to $6,000. The benefit of getting rental excess through travel insurance is that you also get travel insurance cover!

Important information about this website
finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We compare from a wide set of major banks, insurers and product issuers.
finder.com.au has access to track details from the product issuers listed on our sites. Although we provide information on the products offered by a wide range of issuers, we don't cover every available product. You should consider whether the products featured on our site are appropriate for your needs and seek independent advice if you have any questions.
Products marked as 'Promoted' or "Advertisement" are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options and find the best option for you.
The identification of a group of products, as 'Top' or 'Best' is a reflection of user preferences based on current website data. On a regular basis, analytics drive the creation of a list of popular products. Where these products are grouped, they appear in no particular order.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labelling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
Providing or obtaining an estimated insurance quote through us does not guarantee you can get the insurance. Acceptance by insurance companies is based on things like occupation, health and lifestyle. By providing you with the ability to apply for a credit card or loan we are not guaranteeing that your application will be approved. Your application for credit products is subject to the Provider's terms and conditions as well as their application and lending criteria.
