In preparation for Detroit: Becoming Human, familiarise yourself with the work of David Cage and Quantic Dream with the Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls Collection.
If you're unfamiliar with the work of Quantic Dream, you may find the lack of traditional gameplay elements a little passive. Quantic Dream and writer/director David Cage's games are generally referred to as interactive drama and action-adventure games. In many ways they share more in common with old school point-and-click adventures than they do with modern action-adventure games. While this means you lose a certain element of control over the action, it allows for a more engrossing and choreographed narrative experience.
Released in 2012, Heavy Rain follows four playable characters all connected in some way to the Origami Killer, a serial killer who uses the heavy rainfall to drown their victims. Playing as each of the four characters, the player must make split-second decisions that cause the story to branch towards one of over 20 endings.
Heavy Rain's follow-up, Beyond Two Souls features the same life-like motion capture as its predecessor, but this time around with a more supernatural story and actors Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe on board. Beyond Two Souls features two playable characters, Page's Jodie and the powerful entity attached to her, Aiden. The story visits Jodie at multiple points in her life as she struggles to contain the extraordinary and dangerous power of Aidan.
