Health Partners Combined Hospital and Extras Cover

If you're looking for hospital and extras cover all in one, see if Health Partners' combined cover packages can deliver both for you.

Health Partners is the largest open South Australian health fund, with more than 80,000 members covered for hospital or extras.

finder.com.au does not currently have access to this health insurance brand. You may wish to compare options available on the health insurance homepage.

What packages does Health Partners offer?

The four package options offered by Health Partners are each tailored to a different life stage and make finding the right cover easier.

  • Single Starter. Cheap and basic cover for relatively young and healthy people.
  • Couples Choice. Designed for relatively young couples without specific health needs who might be thinking of starting a family.
  • Family Essentials. A family package with additional cover for kids.
  • Prime Living. No excess, full ambulance cover and more affordability by covering important services and removing options that you no longer need, such as pregnancy-related cover.

What limitations and waiting periods do I need to be aware of?

Some of the loyalty bonuses available with these packages are dependent upon switching to other Health Partners plans. However, plan availability may change over time and if you have an idea of the products you’d like to switch to over the next several years, there are no guarantees that these plans will be available later.

With each plan you are limited to one ambulance service per person per year. You may be left with considerable expenses if more than one ambulance trip is required, unless you have additional ambulance cover.

There are health funds other there that include more comprehensive ambulance cover than what is available under these packages, so it could be worth considering the cost of a state ambulance subscription or standalone ambulance cover with a different fund.

Hospital waiting periods apply as follows:

  • 3 years: Cochlear implants and insulin pump replacements.
  • 12 months: Pregnancy, birth and fertility-related services, home nursing, home sleep studies and pre-existing conditions (except psychiatric, palliative care and rehabilitation).
  • 2 months: All other hospital services.

Extras waiting periods apply as follows:

  • 3 years: Laser eye surgery.
  • 12 months: Major dental including periodontics and endodontics, orthodontics and apparatus benefits.
  • 2 months: All other extras services.

What else do I need to know?

Each plan delivers a relatively comprehensive level of hospital cover, while access to Health Partners’ dental and optical centres could also help you get more value out of these packages.

None of these packages include comprehensive pregnancy cover, so if you intend to use the pregnancy loyalty rewards in the Couples Choice plan for a private hospital birth you may need to switch to a Health Partners hospital-only policy that covers pregnancy, rather than moving to the Family Essentials plan.

This could mean foregoing some of the kids benefits that are included in the Family Essentials plan, such as no excess for hospital stays and no-gap dental for children.

How can I make a claim?

To make a claim you can:

  • Download the Health Partners app and upload a photo of your itemised receipt.
  • Send in a claims form via post.
  • Submit your claims online through the Health Partners website.

You can also claim extras on the spot by swiping your membership card at Health Partners or any service provider that has HICAPS facilities. Benefits can also be paid to you by cheque or direct debit.

What are my options for paying my premiums?

Premiums can be paid fortnightly via direct debit from your bank account or payroll only, or monthly, quarterly, half yearly or yearly via:

  • Direct debit. Automatic deductions from your bank account or credit card with a 3% discount for selecting this payment method.
  • Account notice. Notices can be posted to you and you can pay them via BPAY, over the phone, online or in person at a Health Partners Member Services centre.
  • Payroll. Payroll deductions (only available for payroll groups registered with Health Partners).
